It went the same way that personal responsibility did. Quickly. This woman is stupid, and it's a shame she's not dead. Then we would've never heard about her.

Well, I have to admit some amount of empathy with her situation. I'm horrible at street directions and depend on my GPS a lot, especially when navigating to a place I don't know. Luckily mine is very good, and I'd like to think I pay enough attention not to follow obviously incorrect directions (i.e. "turn down this [one way] street"), but it is awfully hard to ignore the directions that are usually so dead-on.
That said, she's still an idiot, and an even bigger one for having the balls to try and blame google for said stupidity.

The machines are now trying to kill us by tricking us with bad directions. Unfortunately, this strategy only weeds out the stupid who would die quickly in the war anyways.

Then the question is should we thank our machine overlords for weeding out undesirables?

I'm surprised she's only suing for $100,000. Typically these idiots go for the millions, especially when it's a big company like Google.
My prediction.....Google will give her some money to A) Get rid of her, and B) Look like it's a kind, sympathetic company (even toward morons)

This reminds me of a story of a German man who trusted his GPS and ended up eating telephone pole. I don't remember him suing anyone.

With B, that would set a dangerous and potentially expensive precedent. Courts (or rather, the lawyers) pay attention to case history.

I'm going to assume that she didn't read the TOS like so many others and bet this will get thrown out in a hurry.

Filing such stupid lawsuits should be punishable by public humiliation.
Or large fines. Whichever works better.

But if they settle outside of court, doesn't that (kind of) get around the precedent thing? Google losing the case in court would definitely set a precedent, but I would think if a resolution is achieved without the court, sequential court cases won't have much luck trying to use the precedent argument.
But I'm not a lawyer, so I dunno.

They won't use court rulings as the precedent. They'll use the fact that Google settled out of court to bring a storm of lawsuits about the same thing. Google would have the rep of just paying people off, and lawyers would gladly take a third of whatever they can get.

I'm pretty sure Google Maps tells you that walking directions are in beta and to be cautious on what roads you are taking.

Settling out of court doesn't set a precedent, and it doesn't mean they admit liability. It mostly means they're paying her to go away.
I get a feeling this one won't make it past a judge's laugh test, though.
