I'm trying real hard not to think about it, but somebody today at work told me of a rumor where there may be a draft or draft announcement 120 days from now. Anybody heard of that, and any truth to it?

It's true in that there may be one. This is always the case.

But there's no draft planned in the near, or even far, future.

We're not hurting for troops nearly bad enough right now that they'd reinstitute the draft.

For a moment I thought this was about either Magic or sports stuff.

I was under the impression that volunteers for the service and reserves was at an all time high, at the very least far off from any below average numbers. With all the recruiters blaring rap and giving away combs at most suburban high school, a draft seems to so unneccesary. On a similar note, my mom still freaks out about the draft, and gives me tips on how to get out of it when it comes. Old hippies FTW

Well I was going to keep it secret but the cat is out of the bag. Very soon the Sydlexia fun forces will be recruiting a few good men (and women) for the Arm-wee the Nav-glee and the Merry-ins. Stay tuned for more info.

No way in hell there's going to be a draft any time soon. I kind of wish there would be a legit push for one because you know what would happen? The Iraq and Afghan wars would end abruptly.

And as you saw from my birthday thread, I'm 39 so I probably wouldn't get drafted anyway. Hurray!

While I am not certain, I am pretty sure that the country must engaged in a war to start a draft. If that isn't the case legally, it is politically. Without the defined goal of a war, military strength could always be questioned and a draft would be infinitely required.

Nope. For example, we drafted people for Vietnam, even though we were never actually at war there.

They can institute a draft whenever they feel the need for troops, and to be honest they don't have to stick to drafting the 18-25 year old men. Just because they have a system in place doesn't mean that they have to follow it.

You are right, though, in that they're not going to do it for any old war. Conscription is extremely unpopular politically.

I've got a couple friends who are trying to get into the Navy, and they are so overwhelmed with recruits right now they are put on a waiting list of up to a year. A few close friends are recruiters, and its been a long time since they can "pick and choose" recruits and turn people away for the most minor things, traffic tickets, being slightly overweight, debt, and etc. I wouldn't worry about a Draft anytime soon. If fact the Navy is so overmanned right now, they're looking for any reason to kick you out. With the way the economy is, people are turning to the Armed Services for a job, and a lot are getting turned down.

^ Yep, same for Army. All my recruiter buddies are dancing in the street, they're so happy that its become to easy to fill their quotas not just with recruits, but with quality recruits. And I have to say I'm kind of happy for them, too; the economic boom really, really made their lives difficult because NO one wanted to sign up, and a lot of them were getting reprimands for not getting enough people signed. (Its especially hard for Army recruiters to get folks in a Navy/Marine town like San Diego.)

Fun fact: Cheech Marin met Chong when he fled to Canada to dodge the Vietnam draft. Without the draft, who knows where we'd be in the weed centered comedy world!

Ever so often this comes up. Is it feasible? Yes. Will it happen in the near future? Most likely not. I remember several years ago when Charlie Rangel was calling for it to be reinstated, because it "wasn't fair that mostly poor kids were voluntarily going into military service."

Despite what you might hear in the media, the military is in pretty good shape, and even though most politicians are a bunch of lying finks, none of them are dumb enough to commit political suicide.

That's an interesting political concept. A desire for the government to "keep" poor areas for a more bountiful volunteer pool. Granted, it happens naturally anyway, but it still makes me wonder.

His argument didn't hold water. It's common knowledge, but if there were a draft, it'd still mostly be poor kids going against their will with the parents of rich ones finding new ways of circumventing it.
