I tend to follow the Steam sales/specials and when a good game is offered at a ridiculously low price, I'll pick it up.

Today I saw that Civilization IV is on sale for 75% off with all of its expansion packs.

$10 for the game and 3 expansions.

Personally I played the original and then saw Civ II but never played it. I haven't seen III or IV. Everywhere I look the reviews are absolutely amazing for this game, but it is 4.5 years old. Is it worth my $10 to pick it up or is it best to just forget that it ever existed?

"Save 75% off Sid Meier's Civilization® IV Complete Edition or any game in the pack when you buy before Monday."

Oh, prepare to have your life stolen for a few weeks. Very Happy Civ IV is one of my very favorite RTS/strategy games. So much fun. (And indecently, that price is epic. Great buy.)

I hope you noticed that the expansion packs are also on sale, in case you don't have them.

Oh, much too late for that. Laughing I bought 'em all in a bundle. Thank you for the tip though, GP--I'd be buying them in a second if I didn't already own them.

I've only played the core game, and it's an absolute steal at that price even without the add-ons. The only downside as mentioned is how much time it's going to suck away from you without you even realizing it.

Well, I bought the pack. I made it somewhat through the tutorial but ran out of time. It is very complicated game for someone who has had no exposure. There are a lot of factors to consider. I'm sure I'll understand it better as I play more. Still, thank goodness there is a tutorial or I'd be stumped.

It seems that the expansions are all independent and don't modify the experience of the primary game. This is interesting. I guess I'll have to make my way through them one at a time.

This sale is a STEAM sale. Steam is a digital software (primarily games) distribution platform. If you are not familiar with it you can get some information here:
http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Edit: the platform is free, but the games do cost money.

I loved CIV IV... my friends were divided on whether to hate it or embrace it (Being old-time Civ fans, they couldn't cope well with the changes in game mechanics) but I loved it.

So yeah... seems a pretty good deal, non?

I'm late to the discussion, but yeah, everyone buy these games. Civ IV is a masterpiece of strategy gaming and it will destroy many many hours of your life and convert them into pure bliss before it's finished with you.

And yeah GP, play each expansion individually as you go. Play a few campaigns in the original game first, then move to Warlords and play a few there, then go to Beyond the Sword. The game changes enough with each expansion to remain fresh and you'll get many more hours out of it by moving to the next expansion when you've played out the previous game.

Also, check out this website: http://www.garath.net/Sullla/civ4.html
It's made by someone who was on the development team for Civ IV and is an avid player of the game. He documented a lot of his thoughts and his own games that he played which are extremely entertaining reads and help you learn a few more tips and tricks you may never have thought of on your own.

There's also a huge community that plays "Succession games" where 4 or more players take turns playing a set number of years and Adventures where the games usually have special rules or maps that make some games very interesting (such as a Vegan rule where no animal resources can be used, or another where you cannot use any religions, etc). Sulla lists some of these on his site too, but you can go here (http://realmsbeyond.net/civ/civ4-succession.html) to see them all at the source.

Even when you're not playing Civ IV, it grips you I've found and that stuff I linked is a lot of fun to read and digest while at work or when you have a spare moment.

I've never played a more addictive game. I've been so close to saving and quiting and I say the dreaded "one more turn" and hit that shiny button. An hour can go by when I'm trying to finish up for the night.

I never played the expansions. I usually think expansions suck and just wait for a new game to come out, but are they worth it in this case?

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

I don't know, but the cost is so low, it seemed reasonable.

Normally the games would individually run $70 without a sale
When bought as a package they are usually $40
Right now the Package is 75% off.

So $10 for $70 worth of games. It was a no brainer to just get them all.

The expansions are worth it, in my opinion...especially if you can get them on sale as low as GPF is. Very, very good price.

If only Settlers was as complicated and rewarding as Civ. I welcome the hexagons. Will be an added dimension to war, in particular.
