| Mission: Readiness' report, "Too Fat to Fight," said that 75 percent of young Americans between the ages of 17 to 24 do not qualify for the military because of failure to graduate [from high school], criminal records or physical problems. The study cited Department of Defense and health data. |

Perhaps Jamie Oliver is right and we should all be signing the damn petition:

Personally I have no problem with obesity restrictions being lifted for military acceptance. Lets be honest, they won't be fat for very long after they get going through basic training. A restrictive diet and active lifestyle will either kill them or get them in the best shape of their lives. Since we don't have a draft at the moment, why not give people the option?

I'd like to point out I know a kid up here at college who was pretty lean when he went into the reserves. Now whenever he comes back from PT or whatever it is, he's fatter as if all he does is sit around and eat so much food and has developed Alcoholism.... granted he was a heavy drinker before now since he's allowed to drink on base he just let himself go.

It would probably look like Ice Hockey on the NES, when both players select nothing but fat guys.

The guy I know is in the Reserves, but he would go to Ft. Drum once a month and do his "training" which he swears is so intense that he can barely move afterwards... well move just enough to get the beer bottle and the fork close to his gapping maw supposedly.

My one buddy was a twig when he went in. He went toured Iraq several times when he came home on leave during those times he went from about 170 to 250+ I mean he's a strong guy now but he is noticeably not all muscle. He's aware of his weight and its a joke now but we all ask him what the hell happened to him. He says once he got through basic training he could effectively eat whatever he wanted and as long as he passed the Minimum Physical Qualifications crap he was fine.

Some of that chow hall food ain't too bad. It's kinda hard to force yourself to eat a salad when you can load up on pizza and chicken wings and a cheeseburger. I, for one, have no will power.

This is more of a question for Hawk or Ash, what is the minimum Physical Qualifications for either Army or Marines? And is anyone in the Airforce?

Actually, I think a few fatties should be put on the front line. They're much stronger with guns.

Well if you're interested in just plain weight standards (as opposed to physical test requirements) you can see the standards (for males) here:
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/l/blmaleweight.htm
Women have a different chart. I only know my own personal requirements--I'm 4'10'', 26 years old, and have a maximum allowed weight of 125 lbs, fwiw.

According to that, the weight standards says I should have a maximum of 195... that's almost exactly 100 pounds less then what I way, and don't get me wrong I am a heavy kinda guy but I'm also working out A LOT compared to a couple other fat-asses....

I hate charts and whatnot that say "you're this tall, so you should weigh this much." It doesn't take varying bodytypes into account at all. Personally, I think that if you can perform well in your fitness tests, you should be able to weigh whatever you damn well please.

That's kinda what I figure too. I never did get why they care so much about weight/height ratio as long as you can perform. Its screws over us midgets, especially *female* midgets...but...oh well. I always make weight as long as I'm very careful with what I eat starting about a month before the PT test. Annoying, but c'est la vie.
Oh and Bro, its probably not ALL muscle if you're a full 100lbs over, but remember that muscle really DOES weigh a lot more than fat. I have a Marine buddy, quite short, squat, muscular dude, who nearly got kicked out because he couldn't make weight to save his life. He was just naturally bulky, and all the working out he does packed on the muscle and pounds. When the Marines did away with body fat measurements, he really got screwed.

I can't stand weight charts for anything other than amusement park rides, elevators and astronauts.
Unless the physical size is a physical restriction then it shouldn't be a health one.

"Most people think Marv is crazy. He just had the rotten luck of being born in the wrong century. He'd be right at home on some ancient battlefield swinging an axe into somebody's face. Or in a Roman arena, taking his sword to other gladiators like him. They woulda tossed him girls like Nancy back then"
I'd go with that if I felt down, but Marv is pure Muscle... and insane...
