We have discussed oral hygiene before, but this is a pretty specific question.

What is the order of care that you apply to your mouth when cleaning it?

For me, I do the following:

1. Rinse my mouth with Plax for about 30 seconds
2. Brush my teeth with an electric toothbrush for about 2 minutes (it has a timer on it)
3. Floss
4. Clear out bonded retainers with a pick
5. Scrape my tongue
6. Rinse my mouth with Listerine for about 30 seconds

It takes me about 4 minutes in total to run through this ritual.

While I am sure that Plax comes first and Listerine comes last, my wife and I have conflicting views about if flossing or brushing should be done first.

Thoughts?

I always do it like this:

Brush first for 30 seconds - I feel it gets rid of the bulk of food particles.

Listerine for 30 seconds - Same as above

Floss

Brush again for one minute.

I dunno, it's an obsessive thing but I have done it exactly like that since I was like 6 or 7 and I'm 25 now. To change now would certainly kill me.

I don't brush unless I have a dentist appointment the next day, I figure I should let them do all the work.

Due to a shitty medical condition my teeth were shot by the age of 19 and so I get to experience one of the joys of being elderly in the prime of my life, YAY! I remove everything, brush it down, place them in a container of cold water, and brush my gums and tongue, then mouthwash.

Make sure to eat a mixture of Cheet-os and Oreos before you head over while you're at it. Smile

As for me:
1.) Moisten the brush with water for 10 brush flicks
2.) Apply toothpaste to brush
3.) Brush top from left to right, behind then in front.
4.) Switch to bottom, same routine.
5.) Cup hands at the sink or use a cup, pouring warm water to clean out the toothpaste
6.) Use listerine for 30 seconds
7.) Spit listerine into sink
8.) Brush tongue off.

I sometimes brush when I wake up, then brush before bed. I toothpaste the brush up, then keep brushing and spitting until it's clean. I try to brush twice a day, but I'm really not very good at the whole "routine" thingy.

Oh, once when I was a dumb kid, I got dared I couldn't do fifteen shots of mouthwash, so I did, and now I gag as soon as it touches my tongue.. True story.

<Drew_Linky> Well, I've eaten vegetables all of once in my life.

Brush teeth for whatever amount of time I feel is necessary.

Use Listerine for about thirty seconds.

Done.

Wow, you guys are kind of weird. Do all of you really use listerine on a daily basis? And GP, I really think using 2 different mouthwashes plus a tongue scraper, is a little bit bizarre.

I'm not afraid to admit I only brush once a day before bed (though obviously I'll brush in the morning too if I'm going to work or something) and brushing for about 2-3 minutes is all I do, and I've never had a cavity or any problem with my teeth. My secret is I brush every inch of my teeth over and over again, including behind them which is an area most people neglect I think.

How is someone taking extra precautions so their teeth don't look like Keith Richards bizarre? Now, if he took way more than 4 minutes to do so, say 8-10 minutes, then we would have to have a dental intervention for Mr. Fontaine.

I completely recognize that my routine is in fact a routine. I have OCD and once something enters into the routine, it is very hard for me to remove it. In fact, I have to honestly believe that there is a positive or negative consequence to alter the routine. If I am unsure, I continue.

For me, I believe that Plax helps soften or release the plaque around the bottom of my teeth. I use it because I tend to have a large amount of plaque build up and prior to use my dentist visits would often times consist of a longer amount of time where they chip away with the scraper to clean it all up.

I choose to use Listerine because I find that it reduces the tendency for me to get canker soars, which I am prone to. It also makes my breath less offensive and soothes my mouth after flossing.

As for the brushing... that is just a normal part of oral hygiene.

I didn't always floss, but my wife and I made a deal. She would go to the dentist that I chose instead of her old one if I started to floss. It turns out that I like flossing now, so I double won. As for why I want her to go to a different dentist... her old one sucked and the one I go to is a personal family friend. As it turns out, my wife needed a root canal and a crown. Because she went to my friend he cut our bill down by over $750 (post insurance).

I started to scrape my tongue because it improved my breath. It takes 3 seconds, so why not. I could go without doing this since I don't believe it helps me directly, but I think it is a nice thing to do for my wife.

Bizarre just means out of the normal realm. I think most people would find it weird that GP uses 2 different mouthwashes every time he brushes because it isn't something most people do. That's all I was saying.

I never used mouthwash up until like 2 years ago. Now I feel filthy if I don't use it.

I don't brush nearly enough, always had good teeth as a kid and didn't brush much, so I thought I just naturally had good teeth that didn't need great care. I was wrong. I've had a few cavities that needed filling now and one really bad one. No cavities for 16 years then all of a sudden I have a few cavities and a bunch of teeth that need to be watched for cavities.

Chill, buddy. You know I'm rarely serious in my dickish comments. Also, you are kinda British so I'm assuming you just brush your teeth with Fanta.

Hey man, I'm chilled like a vodka martini. I just thought I needed to explain myself a bit more.

Actually, we use Marmite here. And if you don't know what Marmite is, you don't want to know.

And you're right username. For the most part, their teeth are clean, but indeed can be a bit snaggly and crooked and misaligned. Brits just aren't as into cosmetic dentistry as the US, and in fact, I haven't even seen one person with braces since I moved here. I like it as it gives the person that little bit more character as opposed to everyone you meet in California having perfectly straight, bleached white teeth.

Plax is anti-plaque, Listerine is antiseptic.

I brush if I remember, I usually do whitening mouthwash 2-3 times a day, chew Trident White throughtout the day, and drink lots of America's fluoride-enhanced tap water.

I'm weird, cause I use Listerine BEFORE I brush. Apparently no one does that.

I thought you weren't supposed to use Listerine before you brushed? Sounds like it could be poisonous.

I brush my teeth.
Rinse and floss.
Then mouthwash for a good minute.
