I mean I'm not a fan of the guy, but I do take offense when whoever the politician is, gets ridiculed for their military experience, or lack of. Again, this was like 30 years ago, I don't believe in this idea that 30 years later, it's the same approach, people change.
What are people going to do if the US can go 40 years without a war? Who would they vote for?
Presidential Election 2050:
Canidate A - Doesn't have any military background.
Canidate B - Was in the Army, but didn't do anything other than drills.
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE?!!
"It's time someone had the courage to stand up and say: "I'm against those things that everybody hates"."
"Now I respect my opponent. I think he's a good man but, quite frankly, I agree with everything he just said!"
"I say your three cent titanium tax goes too far."
"And I say your three cent titanium tax doesn't go too far enough!"

Jeebus I am an unreasonable man, that is true. But Ran Paul is a Republican, I know because I voted for him in the Primary. As for DODD, I wasnt calling Bush a draft dodger, I was saying what if Sen Webb said that. Jim Webb has said it, just not yelled it out during a speech (That was the point). I don't care about someones military service as President, but when you start wars like a cowboy and land on aircraft carriers like your fucking GI Joe declaring victory then maybe, just maybe the guys you sent to real combat might question where you come off acting like a bad ass.
Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American physician and Republican Congressman for the 14th congressional district of Texas. Paul is a member of the Liberty Caucus of Republican congressmen which aims to limit the size and scope of the federal government,[/u]

Again Ash, I raise the question, does military experience make you a better leader during war times? The answer is no, because almost every President who has led us through war has either had no military experience or very little of it.
And Klim, Ron Paul hasn't always been a Republican, he was a Libertarian for a very short time.

I stand corrected. You are right, Ron Paul ran under the Libertarian Party in 1988. I guess that was the last time what's his name checked.

Again Dodd, I answer the question. I agree. However, the ability to listen to your field Generals and people who have actually gone to battle does work wonders doesnt it? It's the equivalent of some child sending you to war and telling you how to fight it because he knows, he's played Call of Duty. It's not that President Bush and his administration was filled with draft dodgers and deferment queens, its that they were arrogant enough to tell established Generals to shut the fuck up and get in line. That in turn cost American lives and innocent Iraqi lives as well, and that is a fact.

I rescind my Ron Paul comment. I was under the impression he was a Libertarian.

You mean just like every other President in history? He IS the Commander in Chief for a reason. If we truly allowed to generals to have absolute control, we would've lost thousands more in Vietnam. Do you really think a General gives a rat's fuck about public opinion?
I just love that you're SO stuck on the "draft dodging" thing, you bring it up every time you mention Bush's name, as if 30 years later it really fucking matters. I guess I'm not fit to run for office because I killed a mouse when I was a young child, because I'm still that evil pussy hate monger who picked on something smaller than me. The fact you're so stuck on that baffles me to no end.

Dodd, you are just spewing at me for reasons I can only assume that George Bush was your uncle. Vietnam? Are you serious? Maybe you should look up a little document called the Powell doctrine, it was supposed to be the answer for Vietnam. Ignored by Bush & Co. and guess who didn't come back for the second term? I participated in OIF, I watched oil fields being secured as power stations, hospitals and everything else was looted or left to fail. We breezed through Iraq all the way to Baghdad only to not have enough troops to cover our asses once we got there. This was a war lead by people who have never fought one, and when you don't listen to those who actually understand the true cost of a life lost in battle, this is what you get. Generals don't have to have absolute power, but neither should our President. Please stop with the draft dodging nonsense and go back and read what I wrote, I never called him that. I was actually trying to draw a comparison to how ridiculous it would be if someone shouted that, just as it was ridiculous to shout Baby Killer.

I am in complete agreement with jeebus on this. I demand we have a time in congress called "questions for the president" in which people can openly insult each other when needed and then everyone behind them can sort of mumble and grumble in agreement. Hell, Parliament isnt the last thing on TV id watch.
In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be *the actual* El Guapo!

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, though I know you'd watch Parliament, so I'm hoping not.

It's things like that, now while you didn't flat out call him a draft dodger, you admitted it to being true. I hate to say it but it's the way Glen Beck does business. "I'm not calling Obama a communist, but he believes is Socialism."
And as I said before, I don't even like Bush. I just find it annoying that people pull the same card over and over and over again about his military experience. I thought once he was out of office, it would be the end of it. But it's not, like I said before every single time I've heard you talk about him, you mention this. And I'm the one who is spewing? Give me a break, Ash! I don't like the guy either, I was fully behind him after 9/11 and I didn't believe that the Iraq situation was something that we needed to be in, afterall Iraq was one of the few places in the Middle East that didn't have any Taliban influence, because of the cold dictatorship.
But guess what? That has NOTHING to do with his military past. Absolutely nothing. When I hear people constantly harp about this, it really does make me lose respect for them. I mean I just gave you a valid argument as to why I didn't care for Bush that much. If I went the other route in saying I hate this Health Care plan, I would bring up Obama's past. Was he really born here? Bla bla bla. It's a ridiculous point to make in a situation that doesn't concern it.
And I understand you have experience, you've seen things happen. And if what you say is true, it's a shame. But that's war. Believe me, Vietnam would've destroyed this country if it was allowed to continue or if we allowed to do generals as they pleased. Just remember, they were asking for more people to go to Vietnam, in a time when people had already had more than enough of it. It doesn't matter how well you fight a war, if the people at home are against it, your hands are tied behind your back. And while the current war is not favorable, it's far from the way Vietnam was. And I'm not saying that the War on Terror is perfect, but the way we fight war has changed, and popular opinion of war has changed. If we don't win it quickly, then people want you out of there.

Let's get back to 'babykilling'. That was so much more fun.
They should've just called it the war on Al-Qadea. That sounds much more reasonable and practical.
@Ash, do you know if it would have any type of effect on the current war if we had used Special Forces (black ops etc.) on Al-Qaeda to completely destroy and dismantle the group? Granted the ideology is always going to be their unfortunately, but would we be in a less chance of getting blindsided by possible suicide attacks?
post edit*: Yeah after Ash answers my question, let's get on back to that baby killin'.

Ok Dodd, In an attempt to end this off topic discussion I will hereby vow to never ever bring up President Bush's past again. There done. Everything else you said I can live with except the comment of how it is just war and it doesnt matter how you fight it. It actually matters a lot. It's called having a plan. It's all swell to send Marines in to wreck the shit out of some country, but then what? The past administration decided to go on the cheap and be fiscally conservative for once and not send enough troops to rebuild a nation that we destroyed. Wow, why are all these people so pissed off at us? Arent we heroes who liberated them from that evil dictator Sadam?
Ohhh. So we messed, up. So you have no power, food, water or Government? Is that any reason to become a terrorist? Yup, it is. It matters a lot how you handle a war. In vietnam we sent a few troops here and a few troops there. Eventually we ended up with thousands there. Gen. Powell wrote a doctrine which states that if we ever go to war we must go all out. If we would have went to war with Iraq with 10 times the troop levels we did, we would have had a much easier time and we would probably be out by now.
SpraCoalee
Black Ops and CIA were used heavily in Afghanistan, by the time my unit got on the ground they had been there for months. We have to walk a fine line with sending in Special Forces due to the Geneva Convention, we can't just off people left and right because sooner or later we become assassins. I think a major problem with how we fought it was the government outsourcing of intelligence and troop levels to private organizations such as Blackwater. I've only met a few of these guys but besides being way overpaid, they are not put in check. They run around Iraq like cowboys acting like clowns. Why? Because they are not in the military, they are civilian guns doing it for the $.
NOW BACK TO BABY KILLERS, This is a big FUCKING DEAL!
