Transcription of the Mega Man instruction manual. I couldn't find the original, but this works.
It seems to be a good example of how bad manuals were way back when. I like:
-Comparing your health meter to a thermometer.
-How Cutman is described as having a "Powerful saw-toothed scissorlike instrument" on his head. They're SCISSORS, damnit!
-Press up to jump, and down to duck. Because Megaman is known for his crouching abilities.
-"Dr. Wright". Enough said. No mention at all about who that girl robot in the ending is.
-"Each time MEGA MAN successfully out-duels each of his six foes, he acquires
new firepower he will need as MEGA MAN enters final stage seven to defeat
evil Dr. Wily. Ah! MEGA MAN must use the newly-acquired armament wisely, for he can use them just once while engaged in battle with Dr. Wily." Not only is this a very vague and inaccurate way to say "As you beat a robot master, you get it's weapon", this is the only hint the manual gives you that you actually DO get the powers of your enemies, which is the hallmark of the series. Nor are there any instructions on how to switch weapons, or what they do.

Do people read instruction manuals now?
There is always the "walk you through the game" introductory tutorial which tells you the controls.
EDIT: To be fair it was printed in Japan. It could just be a bad translation.

Snake's Revenge's instuction manual talked about things that had nothing to do with that game.

You get all your NES, SNES and Genesis roms from Vimm... and you couldn't find the Mega Man instruction manual there?
...I'd link to it, but you know Vimm and how any and all actual links just redirect to the main page. But trust me, it's there. Hell, all 6 are there.

...didn't think to look there, honestly.
And who says you can't link directly to Vimm's? Hoo-yeah! (You may wanna open that in a new window. It resizes itself).

Thanks for noticing. I'm doing an internal redesign and I've noticed people like linking directly to the manuals like that (for example, from Wikipedia). The redesign changes the link structure, but I'll try not to change that particular page so that it keeps working.
It would be nice to redesign the site so that you can link directly to any page, but that's the down-side of using frames.

...woah, I honestly didn't expect to pull -you- in. Welcome to the site and the forums. Hope you stick around, at least to lurk a bit. Love your site, been visiting off and on for like 10 years now.
I thought the no-direct-linking was an intentional design choice or something. To keep leechers away.

Holy crap, I love Vimm's Lair. It was the first site I found with a good collection of manual scans, and it's still one of the best.

The page redirecting isn't to discourage linking, I love when people link to my site. It does solve a problem with frames though. When sites use frames the url never changes so you can't bookmark anything but the main frame (my homepage). If you view a single page by itself, say from following a link, or opening it in a new window, you only see that one frame and the rest of the page is missing. The solution I chose was to redirect people to the homepage so they'll always see all of the frames (menu, content, and ads).
Linking is also how I find forums like this. Every time someone clicks a link to Vimm's Lair it shows up in my logs, and I saw half a dozen recent clicks from this thread and decided to check it out. Every once in a while I scroll through my logs to see what people have to say about the site. I've found you can get very honest feedback (good and bad) when people don't think you're listening.

Why is everyone so excited about Vimm? Have you already forgotten that we had Albert Pyun here not too long ago?
But seriously, I have been using Vimm.net for a decade as well. It's my one-stop shop for retro gaming.

This guy?
Come to think of it, DarkMaze is probably the closest we have to a real life internets celebrity around here. He's mentioned in a Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Start_%28film%29 . Can anyone else say that? (Well, aside from userpages and such).

Thanks Josh, I appreciate that.
I don't know yet if one of my articles will make it into the book as they haven't chosen yet, or at least haven't posted the list yet. I hope so.

Wasn't Press Start also featured in a popular mainstream magazine?

The manual for the Game Boy game Nemesis needs to be seen to be believed. Sadly, it's not on Vimm.net.
