so I've been playing Star Trek Online for about the past week. I got to start the game early since I pre-ordered it. I didn't order in time to get into the beta however. Anyway I'm enjoying it. A lot of the missions are a bit repetitive so far. Like "Go to this sector of space and kill this many enemy patrols." But the same could be said about World of Warcraft.

One thing I really like is that you can take and turn in missions without having to go back to see the person who gave you the mission. You have a Commbadge icon you can click and then you click the name of the person who sent you on the mission and can turn it in without ever having to go back to whatever starbase they are on. You can of course go to then to do this if you want though.

I also like that you can buy and sell items without having to track down a vendor. There is a replicator option that lets you buy/sell items wherever you are. This makes it nice because you don't have to track down a vendor and when your inventory is full you can sell things right away.

I got the collector's edition and it is a decent package. You get a nice Commbadge pin, an art book, some guest pass cards for your friends, and some nice in-game items. My favorite being the TNG era uniforms that are exclusive to the collector's edition. The ones they give you with the regular when you enter your pre-order code look nice and all but the TNG era ones are my favorite by far.

Also they make getting the collector's edition items very easy. I got a pre-order code in the mail, this gave me access to the head start which lets you download the game and play until you get your retail copy. You then enter your code for the retail copy and you're good to do. With the collector's edition the code unlocks the extra items in the game for you.

Overall I'm enjoying this game so far. I still play World of Warcraft but this is a nice diversion for now. I'm playing as the engineering class by the way. Smile

I read a little about this and it sounded like an interesting take on an mmo.

Unfortunately I'm not ready for an mmo and I'm not a huge star trek fan. Have fun icewarm

I've been playing STO as well since open beta and I'm really enjoying the game. I pre-ordered the digital edition and a box from Amazon in order to get the original series uniforms, Joined Trill, and a Borg Bridge Officer.

It's got some great genre innovations and it's just awesome playing an MMO in the Star Trek universe. It's definitely better than the soulless job that WoW has become over the years and for some reason, the game really hit the spot for me after many years of shitty MMOs.

I expected it to be kind of lame and shallow, but I was very impressed with the game. It seems like Cryptic took the Star Trek IP seriously and didn't take too many liberties with it which is nice. Having Cryptic as the developer also brings with it their huge emphasis on character customization, so no two characters and ships look alike which is cool.

My only complaint really is most of the game is very combat focused, which is a little disappointing since there is a lot more to Star Trek than phasers and photons, but I think more varied stuff will get added in soon once they nail down the launch.

Still waiting for my original series mini-skirts though!

This looks interesting as I love exploring Outer Space. However, I think I will continue to wait for The Old Republic instead.

I used to play Star Wars Galaxies and love the Star Wars franchise in MMO format.

I played the original Star Wars Galaxies and enjoyed it but found there to be too much micro-management for my tastes. Like making sure your mineral harvesters have enough power, making sure you empty the collectors and so on.

I also agree with Pandajuice on the combat issue. I could do with some more exploration based missions and some where you are just given tough moral choices like in many of the episodes of the various television series.

I do like that you can customize your characters and ships in great detail. Like choosing what kind of nacelles you have on your ship to the weapons to the consoles on the ship.

I still enjoy WoW but sometimes it feels more like a chore than a game. Star Trek Online is a nice breath of fresh air for me in the MMO department.
