For what it's worth, this is the first time that most of this information has ever been published in English.

Wow, I really can't believe you would do this. The article seems tainted to me.

i think somehow the fact that syd gave permission to post the link, and his brother even agreed to post it if nessecary kinda negates the "OMG HOW COULD YOUUUU" thing.

There doesn't seem to be too much incomplete besides a few grammatical errors, I wonder what the difference between this version and the final version will be. Confused

Maybe it is final, he was saying he couldn't upload it so that could have been the only hitch.

And he has obviously seen this thread and could have gotten rid of it if he wanted to. I think it is wicked funny, kinda like a movie trailer or an album being leaked all over the internet.

I'll wait a few days anyway to make sure he isn't changing/adding anything, seems cool though.

Yeah, it is more or less finalized. I'm pretty sure everything I wanted to say is there, and I'm sure like most articles that go live, there are still some typos. If I wanted this link down, it would have been be down hours ago. I actually fixed the link he posted; it had been at a temporary location with a couple of numbers at the end and I moved it to its final URL.

I still think if Syd had really wanted it up early, he should have done it himself.

It wasn't really up early. He posted it probably 20 minutes before I would have posted it myself. My internet was back up yesterday morning, and by noon, the article was in a largely acceptable form. And knowing that he was going to post it if I didn't, I was in no rush to post. I figured I'd let him have the satisfaction.

The 100th article was not what I expected it to be at all. I thought it would be a retrospective of some sort. That being said, it was still a most excellent article. I like how it had the feel of a research paper, it had a ton of information pertaining to a beloved game (the game that is probably responsible for most people from that era developing a love for gaming, myself included) and was very thoughtfully written. The article also made me interested in the radio show, and I think one of the marks of a good article/paper is to lead the reader into other related subjects. Well done and worth the wait.

Yeah, it really did require a lot of research. Most of the information was only available on Japanese-language websites, and even that information wasn't great. Even forgetting that most of it was run through Google translate and was translated with somewhere between 66-80% accuracy, no one on any site I could find was willing to wager a guess as to who the guy who replaces the Toads in World A-C is. I search for fucking days, and most sites either listed him as ??? or didn't mention him. So I had to find the complete 70s and 80s roster for All Night Nippon, and then Google Image everyone, looking for a good match. And that was fucking hard. Most of the photos of these people were recent, and it's really difficult to determine who someone is from a 23-year-old 8-bit caricature. I'm still not 100% that it's Goro Itoi. I found this on a Japanese blog with googling the Japanese characters for "All Night Nippon":

This is an old promotional postcard for ANN that the blogger found in his parents' attic. He doesn't mention who the DJs are, only that the postcard is from the early 80s/late 70s.

On the far left, you have Miyuki Nakajima, who hosted an ANN from 1979-1987.
Above her, you have Tamori, who hosted an ANN from 1976-1983.

So these are ANN DJs from somewhere between 1979-1983.

The one is the far right is clearly the one who appears in Worlds A-C, and he is clearly older than the others. Goro Itoi did his second ANN run from 1975-1981, so that could very well be him. I couldn't find very many pictures of him, but I also couldn't find any other ANN DJ who resembled that caricature. Given his history, it makes sense that it would be him. He was one of the premier ANN DJs, a pioneer in Japanese radio, and he was very famous. He even introduces Led Zeppelin on a popular live bootleg. December 28th, the day he died, is recognized as some sort of official national disc jockey day in Japan.

How the hell did you get a hold of that anyway?

...i guess it's time I told how i got it

while looking through the source code of the main webpage i discovered a hidden link (that's no longer there). The link only brought me to the page talking about how the levels are different. But then i did a google search on "sydlexia all night nippon." remembering that syd said that the printmaster article was able to be accessed through google before it was even uploaded and found the first page. I PM'd syd a WHILE ago asking about and he told me it was an unfinished article and to keep it on the down low. I had no idea it was the 100th until syd uploaded the 102 article.

This Is A Joke
I'm not going to tell how I acessed it because then any unfinished article may be accessed. Not that I'm saying there are any. I havent done the thing i did to see the 100th article in a while

Personally, I think that the article was well worth the wait. I found it to be a bit more informative than some of your other stuff, Syd. I am sad, though, that I recognized Beat Takaheshi's sprite without even seeing the name; he was the teacher in the original Battle Royale, and fucking phenomenal.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

Great 100th, VERY thorough, and should be worked in as a reference to the Wikipedia page for SMB so we can get our foot in the door there.

Posted about this on my other forum too since the word must be spread: link

If they can have their own Mario game then why can't we? I propose we make one:

Mario has done just about everything: plumbing, baseball, soccer, tennis, kart racing, medical research, painting, sweater design, juggling, demolitions, pinball, wandering around blindly with a bucket on his head...

Interestingly enough, he hasn't yet done any games where he did any plumbing despite him being a plumber (unless fighting turtles in an absurdly spacious sewer counts).

When he was a carpenter he at least did some carpentry-related word.

Yeah, Mario Bros. totally counts as plumbing!

At the very least, it counts as "getting your pipes cleaned".
