Ok, I have not owned a portable gaming system since I had the Sega GameGear. Soooo...I have decided to pick up a Nintendo DS this week as I have no interest in a PSP. Just wondering why I should pay the extra 50 for the DSI and if it is really worth it. I have a Wii as well if that means anything. I do not take pictures or chat. Thanks for the help all and I apologize if this has been asked before.

Go for the DSi. You're probably used to bigger screens (the TV), and the DSi's screen is just awesome. You also won't need the GBA slot either since you seemed to have missed out on that era.
The DSi's buttons and D-pad are wayyyy better than the DS or DS lite's, too.
edit: if you don't have a music player on you, it can also double as one of those, provided your music is in AAC or m4a format.

Yeah, I have both and I would get the DSi for the reasons above....and you will take pictures.

Like I said I really don't need the camera, I have two of those. I really only need it for gaming, as I may be getting deployed soon down the road. The D-Pad being better is a big sell for me. I always wondered how the controls were on the DS, and I guess prior to the DSI they sucked. Music is good, I assume I can convert my Itunes and use them. Alrighty then, DSi sounds good so far.

I prefer the DS Lite. I don't have any issues with the controls, and think you'd have to be pretty OCD about gaming to notice a difference in the D-pads. The camera is a useless feature considering your cell phone has a better one, and I love the backwards compatibility with GBA games. The DSi's screens are only marginally bigger, but enough to where when playing most DS games that were designed for the screen size of the DS Lite, the DSi stretches them to fit the bigger screen which slightly reduces the image quality. So it's a trade-off, slightly bigger screens at the expense of slightly reduced graphic quality.
I missed out on the GBA era as well, but now I'm going back and grabbing some games on the cheap that I missed to play them on my DS now. I just grabbed Link To The Past, Minish Cap, and all of the GBA Castlevania games on Ebay and can't wait to fire them up on my DS.
Also, isn't the battery life a lot shorter on the DSi?

I vote for the DSi for the reasons B-Man said but also because well, it's newer. And Nintendo has said that soon or later the DSi will be the standard DS and games will come out that require the cameras and the faster hardware.
And don't forget the built-in internet surfing capabilities and the overall better internet experience over the other DSs.

DSi. The only issue that it can't play the Guitar Hero games, if you're into that. But the DSi is the way of the future. There will inevitably be games coming out that only run on the DSi and not the DSi Lite.

If you were to save the fifty dollars from the DSi and buy Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Fire Emblem, Mario Bros. Superstar Saga, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Metroid: Fusion then the DS Lite is the better choice.

I'm still not convinced that will ever happen to be honest. The DSi has been out for over a year now in Japan and there are still no DSi exclusive games that the DS Lite cannot run. Also, the ones so far that I've seen that are planned look woefully shallow and gimmicky.
I'm not convinced there will be much of a library of games that only the DSi can run by the time the next gen handhelds hit the market seeing as how it's been a year already and there aren't that many that have even been announced.

I don't see the DSi replacing the DS lite, I don't see whatever exclusives it gets being that ground breaking and I can't see a lot of developers realizing that a camera function will suddenly add so much more to the game. Although maybe they could use it to make a Pokemon Snap 2?

well, the advantage of the DSi, is the DSiware. granted, its not much of an advantage, but soon they will start allowing demos, and they will start releasing more ware games for that.

What you are missing, guys, is the fact that Nintendo is still wanting to make all of these games with cameras but the majority of the companies don't want to make the games until the system takes off... Much like a lot of Nintendo's other stuff.
"Wii fit board!"
"GB Camera!"
"e-card reader!"
"Gameboy printer!"
Need I continue?

Man, I loved the Game Gear. I still have mine, even.
Anyway, if you never had a GBA, then I'd recommend the DSi. You can download some awesome games, plus the screens are bigger.

Because no backlight is total suckage. I don't know how we played games on such dim, lifeless screens all the way until 2003.
The better choice is to spend $100 on a DS Lite, enjoy the entire DS library as well as the entire GBA library, and feel good that you spent the extra $50 you saved on games rather than a stupid camera.

Well there you have it:
Buy a DSi for the camera, internet, better wifi, better hardware, and better software. And the possiblity of DSi only titles.
or
Buy a DSlite because it's cheaper and has a GBA slot.
Now, from my comparison it may seem that I am being unfair to the DSlite. I am not. I love GBA games. There are lots of good games. I am just saying weigh your options.
Of course, if you are of the right sort, the GBA slot doesn't matter in the slightest. For r4 cards mean that your DSi can play most any game with emulators.

I still have a classic DS and I love it. However, when it finally gives up the ghost (five years of hard-core gaming on this thing), I'll be probably upgrading to the DS Lite. I need my GBA games. They might not come out anymore, but I sure do love all the great times we had together.

Actually, I forgot:
You can get an iPlayer (flashcard only used for unconverted video/music/images and NOT piracy) and play GBA roms on it using an emulator (which works 99%), so there ya go.

It depends how hardcore you are. If you are on Bmans level, go with the DSi. If you don't really need the extra features, go with the DS Lite and get a game or two with the money you are saving.
Any exclusive DSi games would just seem gimicky to me. I don't play my DS all that much though and havn't tried the DSi, but from what I've heard, I personally would rather save the cash and get a game or two.

Thanks all, went with the lite. Ive got the Wii for ware games but I really wanted to check out some GBA games that I missed out on. I actually picked up 20 GBA games on Black Friday for 1 dollar a piece brand new. Right now Im stuck on FF2, this shit is a tad harder than the SNES version...

Right. Those have only just been announced, so as I said, there are still no DSi exclusive games out yet, and won't be for another 3-6 months at least. Also, those are both the ridiculously shallow-looking and gimmicky bullshit games I referred to in one of my other posts.
Oooo use the camera to play an overlay shooting game?! Um, gay.
