My wife is taking online classes. In some of her classes, they have message boards for class discussions. Jesus H, there are some dumb fuckers on there. Some of the people there make hacker look like a Rhodes scholar.
For the most part, people are nice and polite and use common sense and courtesy. But there are a handful that must think they are on a fucking GameFAQs board or something because they are basically trolling the board. But they are fucking students of that class. I guess they think they can say whatever they want, argue, call names, etc, and it won't matter. The fucking prof sees this shit. I don't get it at all.
It's an intro business class and they are supposed to discuss Wal-Mart and it's positive and negative effects on a community. I think the prof knew it would get a heated discussion going and get people ranting and raving so he could find out who had common sense and who the morons were from day 1.
Has anyone else taken online classes with message boards for class discussion? Are there idiots like this in all of these classes?

I'm taking my Intro to Criminal Justice course online. Goddamn it there are stupid people in there. I had to argue that 1) Murder is worse than rape and 2) The Patriot Act was the worse thing I've ever seen passed.

Took two online classes, Accounting 1 and Abnormal Psychology.
Got an A- in Accounting 1, and an A in Abnormal Psych. Never went on the message boards. Had to go into at least three live chats hosted by the professor for Accounting, that wasn't bad. People asked legitimate questions, and genuinely wanted to learn.

I took an AP U.S. Government online my senior year of high school. The collective IQ of our class was probably less than that of 4chan's. I swear, I got less out participating in class discussions than I did out of slogging through the first forty minutes of Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Well, given if the situation was rape then murder, I'd politely ask my assasin if we can do it the other way around.

I've taken a couple so far. A's in each of them, MIS courses and a Corporate Finance course. Granted I go to a phyical college that offers some online classes I can imagine that if she is attending a completely online college that the group of people, especially if at the entry level of a degree, will be complete idiots. Not saying that everyone that pursues a degree online is dumb but it definitely attracts most of the dumb persuasion that don't/couldn't go to an actual college.

Well presented with both, then it shouldn't matter.

would you want your final moment on earth to be filled w/ass raping? or would you rather die trying to fight your way out of that situation? if there is an eternal history book of you, then i would want the final page to say "username died trying to save his life" instead of it saying "username took it in the ass and then got shot in the head"

Well I see life differently. It wouldn't matter, you would still be dead. I hate arguing this, so can we cease?

I don't know, in a lot of ways rape is worse than murder. I mean, I know a few people who've been raped and it really doesn't leave them... whole sometimes, they just aren't the same. The amount of mental damage it can do... I don't think that's clearly a better situation to be in than to just be dead.
On topic, I've never taken any online classes, sorry.

How does a topic about online courses turn into a rape vs murder debate... IN THE FIRST EIGHT POSTS?

lol.
Your opinions about rape vs. murder are based on values, which can be different for different people. There are no ultimate morals or values, so murder can be worse or "better" than rape depending on who you are, where you live, what time you live in, etc. Your assignment, I'm guessing, was to construct the best argument to persuade those who did not have an opinion or had a differing opinion.
I'm not a huge fan of online classes, but I guess if it works, you know? Part of getting an education, for me at least, was the whole "ritual" of attending class in front of a professor and my peers. Interaction is just as important as information to me. I guess it could depend on the subject.

Gah... Back on track.
My wife took an online course. I have never seen her work so damn hard. She had to constantly interact with message boards and give ideas and contribute. When I say "had to" I mean that her grade was 25% dependent on her participation. This wasn't some quick "take a test while you read the book" type course. I am convinced that she learned more in that class than she does in a normal class where she tends to be a quiet person.

I've taken two. One was Analytical Mathematics, which was just random math, and Psychology. Got an A+ in math thanks to extra credit and getting 100% on every test (which always took 10-15 minutes but you had an hour to do them). Also got an A in Psychology, wrote two papers and out posted everyone else on the discussion boards - cause let's face it, I'm a total message board whore.
But, yes, usually people take them as a blow off class so discussion board conversations are usually not that intellectual.

Can't you take online courses in America from Poland given the global nature of the internet?
Or do our institutions deny zloty currency?

They deny. I'll have to wait until 2012, then we'll have the Euro.

This is kind of the impression I got. Obviously there are a lot of serious students that know what they are doing. But it's kind of like night school for people who don't want to actually go to school. I'm guessing there will be a lot of people who have trouble interacting in social settings so they don't go to real classes, but decided to take online classes since all they do is play on the computer all day anyways.
She is hoping the idiots will all get weeded out in the intro classes so the more advanced classes will have some higher quality students to interact with. I told her the morons are what make it fun.
