Ice hockey is cool. So here's a thread about it.

Go Canadiens!

Cristobal Huet is the best!

And we won three gold medals in a row in the junior championship!

Well, he's right. Some people take hockey way too seriously in Canada, probably mostly in Quebec.

But I like it anyway. I watch it just once in a while, so it wouldn't
change my life much if I didn't.

I think you could say that about every sport though. There are riots sometimes in soccer stadiums.

I just thought the article was funny and relevant. I don't know a nigger's shit about hockey.

Where's sock when you need him?

Seriously, until I saw the thread creator's name I assumed Sock did it.

This thread might as well be called "ATTN: Sock"

Habs are pretty fuckin' hot this year, they don't have any dominating forwards (Yes yes, Koivu is good at hockey, but I wouldn't call him dominating) but they get a lot of production from their third line, more than you'd expect at least. Huet has been fantastic these past couple years, what bit him on the ass and made him decide to be a superstar? Makes ya not miss Theodore, eh?

What about that Gold medal in 03-04? Tell us about that? Why'd you leave that out, huh, huh?

Anyway, I'm a Rangers, and Panthers fan (two teams? PROPOSTEROUS! Where Kasparaitis goes, I follow), and in international hockey, I'm a Russian fan. But if Russia gets knocked out, it's 'go Canada' all the way.

Although it'll surely get me voted against in any other contests where forum members face off... but go Devils!

Plus I played hockey for like 7 years and am trying to get back on the ice ASAP now. I miss goaltending.

Having the unfortunate fate of being a Blackhawks fan has led me to ignore hockey for about five years now. That needs to change, but the 'Hawks still sucking doesn't help.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I think it is about the junior championship (or whatever it's called).
That year, Canada lost to USA 4-3 in the finals.
One of USA's goal was scored by our own goalie. It didn't piss me off much, I just thought that goal was really funny.

And I know we don't have a dominating forward. We wouldn't have so much problem in 5-on-5 if we had one.

Also, the Devils are sometimes annoying with their trap play, but the new NHL rules make it less boring than before. And they have Martin Brodeur.

I'd like it if the Nordiques came back. It might happen in a few years.

I used to be a really big Penguins fan... way way back about a million years ago! My dad tried to disown me for not being a Canadians fan... ha! Now, I just can't bother to watch it at all, there's too much politics mixed in the last few years.

I'll stick to golf (which I can't really watch as often as I'd like since I work weekends, around the same time as all the big tournaments). My favorite PGA golfer used to be David Duval, but since his health problems a few years ago, I haven't really found a new top golfer... except Tiger Woods *sarcasm* (he may be good, but he's no favorite of mine!)

I also really enjoy wrestling, mainly WWE and TNA, as well as mixed martial arts, mainly UFC and PRIDE. Though, because of work I rarely get to watch these either...

---> My personal favorite sport to watch on TV or live is gymnastics. It takes me back to a past life of mine. Smile

Yeah dude, when Fleury bounced that pass off his own D-man and it ended up in his net as the game winning goal. I can't even watch that anymore, it's just painful, man.

The Devils are fucking annoying because their fans think they're God damn amazing for buying the Cup. And Brodeur is a fucking cocky bitch asshole. He's good, but he could be better if he didn't think he was already the best.

Where's this talk about the Nordiques coming back? I know they're pushing to make the league a 32 team affair. They want to split the conferences into two divisions, one with seven teams, one with eight. What could possibly fill those other two spots? Is there some buzz that one of the expansion teams is going to be in Quebec?

32 teams? They can barely fill the arenas as it is right now (with very few exceptions)!

Why not get rid of some of the lamer teams so that the talent isn't so fucking diluted? Florida needs two hockey teams? Wha...?

Yeah, there's a couple franchises that need to go. There are some markets that just aren't made for hockey. Being a Devils fan, it's hard to argue that New Jersey isn't one of them, but somehow, they manage to put asses in seats most of the time. Probably due to their general success year after year.

Still, there's some teams:
Phoenix and Florida (Panthers, the Lightning actually do relatively well with Lecavelier as their centerpiece) come to mind. There are other markets that intuitively should be doing SHIT with their teams, but thrive (Carolina, Dallas). It's a strange league team-wise.

I wish they'd somehow remove about 4 teams from the league though, retract it just a hair. And after they do that, bring back the Whalers. They had the coolest uniforms in the history of hockey. Simplicity is awesome in hockey sweaters.

The Devils are annoying to you because you're a Rangers fan. And how did they buy the Cup? Lou Lamoriello has historically been known for underpaying his players and still managing to keep them in New Jersey, keeping the Devils competitive year in, year out.

I dunno man, I think about a 55 million dollar salary constitutes as buying Cup. It doesn't compare to the Red Wings, but still.

About the Nordiques, they should come back soon, but there's not a large enough arena in Quebec city yet.
The demand is very high, even more since the Rempart de Québec won the Memorial Cup.

Was does Florida have ONE hockey team, let alone two? There is never any natural ice in Florida? And, what's really messed up, is that here in Oregon, we don't have a team!!! Which is strange becasue our semi-pro team, (The Portland Winterhawks of the WHL) are really popular here.

We almost got the Pinguins a few years ago, until Mario stepped in and saved the team from moving. Paul Allen (Owner of The Portland "Jail" Blazers) had the best offer on the table until that point.

WHL is tier one junior hockey, not semi-pro. It's U20.

The Bolts aren't moving, neither are the Panthers. The owner of the Panthers has never even mentioned selling or moving the team.

Kubo knows MUCH more about hockey than Sock.

By the way, hockey is awesome in HD. I feel bad because I've been much to occupied with school to keep up completely with hockey, but from what I've watched, it's been a fairly boring season. The oversaturation of interdivisional play really frustrates me; mixing up the schedules really couldn't hurt, y'know? I'm definitely in support of shortening the season from 82 games for the time being, too. It'd be a much smarter move than trying to expand the league to 32 teams.

I think the NHL has a hard time understanding that they did just come off of an entire season off not too long ago. Not everyone is back on the bandwagon, and you can't go back to the way it was in the high times so quickly. They still have a lot of rebuilding to do.

Smurf's only a Devil's fan during the playoffs.

And if the league moves to 32 teams, there will be less divisional play. Someone proposed six division games a year, then you play two a year against everyone else in the league. I think five per division is enough, but whatever. The schedule isn't the problem, the fact that they're taking physicality out of the game is the problem. The new horseshit rules are the problem. The no fighting with five minutes left is bullshit, the no goalie zone is bullshit, the delay of game when you clear the puck over the boards is bullshit, and this "hooking" malarky is bullshit. They only reason scoring is up is because there's so much power play time. I like the shootout, and I like the two line passing, but the rest of the shit needs to go. They're making this a fucking Euro league.

At least I can stick with a team no matter what, Mr. "I Picked Up the Rangers Because Kasparaitis Went There and My Real Favorite Team Has Blown Goats Since Its Inception".

Don't get me wrong, I can't stand the fact that they're trying to tone down the contact with new rules. Hooking is the worst; they've gotten more leinent on calling it since coming back from the lockout (god knows I'll never forget going to the 'Canes home opener of the '05-'06 season and having to explain to my then-girlfriend that the hooking rule stopping the game every two minutes was bullshit), but it's still a terrible penalty that kills the speed of the game.

As far as expansion goes, there's no need for the NHL to expand or move teams right now. If a team ends up in Kansas City, a town that's NOT a hockey market by any means, then that just goes to show that any fucking town can build a nice new venue that could hold the number of fans for an NHL team and get a franchise. There's a reason that the Scouts only lasted two years in KC in the '70's before moving to Denver and becoming the Rockies: they were $900,000 in debt (about $3.1mil today according to The Inflation Calculator). Of course, there are some markets that would be great for hockey right now...hell knows the league needs more Canadian teams. But for the time being, 30 teams is alright. I'd much rather have it at 28, but if they show they can handle 30, then more power to them.

Intradivisional play...you could easily tone that down without pulling in two more teams. Six games against a team's biggest intradivisional rivals, five against the other two teams (ex.: Devils would play Rangers and Flyers six times, Pens and Flyers five times). Three games against the rest of the teams in your conference, and two games against all of the teams in the other conference. 82 games, every team gets to play every team, rivalries get a little more meaning, and everyone goes home happy. Of course, you'll get people complaining that the Coyotes really don't have two intradivisional rivals...fuck, then pair them up against whoever you have left. Once you form the rival system, you'd be set.

There's just a lot of things about the NHL that frustrate me right now and cause me not to watch. As much as I love the Devils and hate the Rangers, for example, I don't want to see them playing once every ten games. It just wears things out between the two teams when they're playing against each other so often. Add that in with the shitty rule changes, and it's just a very, very hard league to get behind 100% and still be happy about it.

Oh, and there's no apostrophe in "Devils". They're just Devils, as in more than one Devil. The Devil doesn't belong to anyone, Sock. You will learn this one day.

That means "I have nothing so I have to play Grammar Police".

Anyway. If Brodeur got traded, you'd still follow him and his team, right? That's the same reason I follow the Rangers, where Kaspar goes, I go.

You make it sound like I don't stick the by the Panthers. Clearly I'm going to be behind them, despite Keenan butchering the entire team.

And I'm not saying expansion is the answer for the congested schedule, but I wouldn't complain if there were 32 teams. It wouldn't change the league much, and since they're pushing so hard to have four divisions, it looks like we're going to end up with 32 teams.

The over-saturation of division play is still lame, though.
