Prologue: I don't care where this conversation goes as long as it's about Mortal Kombat. I'm heavily biased until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Once it went 3D I got infected with a highly contagious string of apathy. The game just sucked. Anyway, this is my first run down of my thoughts about the characters.
Have fun, but don't go off topic.
[/end Prologue]
MK went downhill once it went 3D and adapted cheesy Fatalities... for this reason, my favorites land, at furthest, in UMK3
Kabal. I love this guy. Easy launcher combo, speed, projectile. Powerful in MK3 and UMK3
Johnny Cage. In MK2 he was THE MAN. Straight up combat. This movie star had no stunt double.
Kung Lao. I've been beaten senseless by expert Kung Lao players. If you think he's average or lower, you haven't really played anyone good.
Kitana. MK's original hottie. Sonya, gets bumped back to #2. the first time yusaw her with her mask off. Instant lust.
Shang Tsung. This guy changed fighting games. No Mokujin, no Edge Master, or any last boss who mimics other characters.
Shao Kahn. MK2 kept final bosses actually scary, larger than life, badasses back then. He still is a challenge today.
Scorpion. Hard to appreciate now all this guy has done. He broke rules back in MK1. His spear attack is legendary. His Fatality iconic. Scorpion is groundbreaking, even if his leg sweep special move was not.
Sub-Zero. So obviously, why didn't Capcom think to name a guy that? and with FREEZE attacks? Next to Kano, one of the most controversial with his spine ripping Fatality. Iconic too, but he's mostly been one-dimensional in play style, a weakness they'd tried to fix. MK3 gave him hge Throw priority, then took it away... MK Gods rule supreme.
Raiden. Fun to play, not a lot of depth though. Innovative Fatality as his first ever, and maybe his electric uppercut in MK2, but once MK3 hit the creators just lost passion.
Stryker. Boring. Dumb. A cop wearing a baseball cap? We've got ninjas, we've got SHIVA! Loser.
Goro. This is the guy you were scared of before you fought Shang Tsung for the first time.
Baraka. Not as one dimensional as you think. Behind that handsome, soft, and pretty boy exterior lies the heart of a warrior.
Lui Kang. Chicken fight! Seriously though, he's the real flagship character of the game... sometimes. Anyway, the computer playing him was impossible, most players? A walk in the park. My advice? Duck. Also, the actor that played him played Gen in the new Street Fighter movie. Aged well. Kristin Kreuk is HOT!
Kano. Street Fighter had no real badasses. Luckily, there's the heart ripper, serial killer, mecha-eyed Kano. Before his eye laser was implemented as a move he was overpowered with moderately difficult special moves. A good Kano player was unstoppable. Without Kano, the world of fighting games would be very different.
Sonya Blade. I thought Sonya was HOT(see Kitana). Kitana eventually took one of her moves and she wasn't hugely powerful back in the day, but she changed gaming in her own way. Most look at her and blow her off, but she did a lot for females in gaming. Chun Li would hold only a higher title.
Night Wolf. Infinite combo possibilities, but as a character he was a stereotype. Unexciting because of it. You picked him to show your friends you could win with any character.
That's enough for this post... let me know if you want my jaded opinion on anyone else
Also, Johnny Cage is my #1 character. Brilliantly designed, and his story was ripped by Street Fighter with Fei Long later, but a powerhouse back in the day. The only thing then that would have made him impossible to beat would be huge uppercut priority, of the sort that the girls(Kitana and Mileena) or that Kung Lao had.

Well, my favorite character is easily Raiden--less because of his moves and more because of Christopher Lambert's kick ass portrayal of him, but still. It really broke my heart when he went evil, and the fact that none of his alternate costumes took him back to his "Defender of Earthrealm" look just rubbed salt in the wound. Sigh. I love Nightwolf too though, and I don't think any true MK fan can honestly say they don't love Sub Zero and Scorpion.
I'm not really one for fighting games, which is probably why all of the 2D MKs passed me by. The first MK I was really interested in was Deadly Alliance, because of the story, Konquest mode, and the Krypt. Most of these features (okay, except the story part) got better as the next installments came along, so I kept buying 'em. I own, and am pretty good at MK: DA to MK: A. DA is my favorite game to just play, while Deception easily has the best Konquest mode. I mean, teleporting between the realms and interacting with just about every famous character in the MK universe? I don't care if its just stupid fight challenges and fetch quests, sign me up!

I've never played any of the games past UMK3, except MK 4 one afternoon at a friend's house. Anyway, Rain was the first guy I managed to do a fatality for by accident (the vivisecting uppercut; without knowing the sequence).

I firmly believe that MK4 is incredibly underrated, it basically played just like the 2D games, but went 3D in order to not get left behind in the graphics race which was a big draw at the time. The roster and fatalities were both top-notch in that game in my belief, the only thing I'd change is replacing Tanya with Mileena.

Fei Long is a Bruce Lee clone, and Bruce Lee was an action star.
Shocker, I know.

I really got into MK with MK4 because someone got that for me for my birthday. I'm not too great at the games but I really love the characters. My favorite would have to be Cyrax. He's got a fucking awesome name and he's a badass robot killing machine!

Favorite kharacters:
MK1 - Sub-zero, Scorpion
MK2 - Baraka, Johnny Cage, Jax, Mileena, Reptile
UMK3 - Sonya Blade, Kano, Scorpion, Noob Saibot, Rain, Nightwolf
MK4 - Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Quan Chi
(never played Deadly Alliance
MK: Deception - Baraka, Tanya, Ermac, Li Mei
MK: Armageddon - Baraka, Tanya, my custom character, Taven, Kenshi
(haven't played DC Universe)
My favorite MK game would probably be either UMK3 (best of the 2D games) or Deception (best of the 3D games). As for my favorite kharacter of all the games, it'd be Sonya Blade for the 2D games (her special move selection is absolutely perfect) and Baraka or Tanya for the 3D games (Baraka's arm blades in three dimensions is just plain awesome, and if you use Tanya correctly, she can beat the krap out of any kharacter without batting an eye).
Also, I am incredibly disappointed in the amount of words in this thread that start with the letter "c" whose c's were not replaced with k's.

If Fei Long wasn't a Bruce Lee rip off, and was a rip off of any one from Mortal Kombat, it would have to be Liu Kang.

mortal kombat has always had cheesy fatalities, and personally I think that deadly alliance is the only worthwhile game in the series.

I loved Kano in the original. He was probably my favorite from that game. I remember the first time I did his fatality in the arcade. I was just randomly moving the joystick and pressing buttons and all of a sudden he did his fatality where he rips the opponent's heart out. I was like "Holy shit! I actually did it!"

I always thought it would be a step cooler if he took a big bite out of the heart after ripping it out.

I've always sucked at MK games. I just can't string any combo's together or make a fluid attack to be good so I'll play them but ultimately suck.

I loved MK1 and MK2, but I lost interest when they added the "run" button and the combos. It just made the game too fast for my taste. I also didn't like how the fatalities became "silly." I preferred the darker atmosphere of the first two games.
Years later I picked up MK Deception, played it and loved it. I'm pumped for the first next-gen MK game.

I still love MK and all. I was huge into it as a kid, but I just.. can't PLAY MK's 1-UMK3 today. The controls have aged badly.
That said, I did enjoy 4 (a lot.) Never played any of the 3D games other than that, sadly.
Looking forward to MK8 myself. They improve that, they're golden.

I was probably the only guy among a group of friends that groaned loudly when he first saw Bo' Rai Cho.
Being Hispanic helped.

I said Johnny Cage's STORY was ripped off to be used for Fei Long. As was mentioend several times, they were both martial arts movie action stars.
Achetypically, Fei Long is a rip off of Bruce Lee, like Forest/Marshal Law in Tekken, and to a small extent Maxi in Soul Calibur. Lui Kang would follow in the Bruce Lee clone area as well,, more so in MK1 than in MK2 and beyond since he seems to have his unique identity in this time period.
I actually really like the cyber-ninjas. Cyrax and Sektor are tons of fun to play. They just have Fatalities that seemed like they were thought up by a 50s monster movie director with $5 to budget to it.

I've always had troubles deciding whether a special move based on vomiting is really awesome or really dumb.
Also, I forgot to mention how awesome Sektor is. Usually when people start getting on my nerves and pick the same character repeatedly, I just choose Sektor, stand in one place, and spam his homing missles until they die.

Ugh, Bo' Rai Cho...by far my least favorite Mortal Kombat character in the history of the series. What is it with fighting games adding fat joke characters now? Him, Rufus in Street Fighter IV, and I saw there is gonna be one in the new Tekken

Not to mention the puking/farting special moves. Lame.
