Everywhere on TV it seem the last 2 weeks since that Phelps thing I have been seeing anti drug commericals more than normal, they are even appearing on game sites now!
While the liberal movement has put a black president in office and same sex couples are slowly getting more rights, those who smoke cigarettes are getting a major tax increase April 1st here in TN and anti weed sentiment is growing stronger like it was in the 1930's(Reefer Madness anyone). I am trying to figure out if this is "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" for Republicans.
I personally don't think weed should be illegal but I think it should have heavy rules and regulations on it. It is true that weed affects you like alcohol does in driving and it does take away your intiative to do anything productive(like go class). I am not saying that the claims are unfounded or unreasonable but The United States is showing that weed will not be legal in some form during the next 20 years or so at least. I just think its funny on how liberal america collectively is on some things but so conservative on others.
I'd ALWAYS have 3 reactions:
1) I toke, feel good...then hit Del Taco, and get 2 double dels, 2 burritos and a Macho Nachos...JUST FOR ME.
2) I toke, feel good...then the room starts spinning, and I go to bed and have REALLY wierd dreams.
3) I toke, feel good...then get really social...call random people, poke my friends GF's boob and say "BOOP!" or start cleaning my apartment at 3AM..

I know what you mean. If we legalized weed, the prison population would decrease drastically, people would have an alternative to nasty painkillers and psychotropic drugs, and a host of other positives. It does need to be controlled then, though. People can't drive high, no matter what the stoners say about "making them drive better."
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I came into this thread to make some kind of attempted-thoughtful point about marijuana legalization...too busy laughing now...maybe later...
Marijuana is legal in many countries, because people are slowly realizing that cigarettes and alcohol kill you faster.
India has the best, to my knowledge. Hinduism considers weed a sacred plant, so it's fully legal (altough it's all government controlled - think PROFIT).
Now, let's see. If USA Government legalised marijuana on the condition that all sales would be controlled by government (except small quantities [say, two or three plants] for personal use), with a small tax on the prices, you'd be able to fix the crisis with just one law being passed. Just think about it.
And if USA does it, so do other countries - which means everybody wins!
Now, about my "alcohol and cigarettes kill faster" argument - think how much people die from lung cancer or drunk driving each year. Weed makes you sort of lazy, so you're less likely to move from your apartment/house/shack and drive. Of course, that's only based on my personal experiences with weed, so it might be different for others.
I now bestow upon you the title of Most Awesome Person.

I am guessing you drive to this place. If this is true, then you are the reason why we have laws against marijuana.
While public approval of the drug has perhaps not shifted very much, what has changed is the perception of tax dollars being spent to fight against a drug that seems fairly meager compared to problems of larger consequence... we can call those problems 'the economy'.
I fully support the legalization of marijuana as a taxable commodity that is highly regulated and has all the same laws and rules as alcohol.

Nekkoru, weed will kill you faster than cigarettes. I believe a joint has about 10x the carcinogens of a cigarette.

The number of carcinogens doesn't reflect their power; there might be 10x as many carcinogens but they also could be 10x weaker than carcinogens in normal cigarettes. I'm not saying that's the case, but I always heard the same thing in school and never got an answer from my health teacher about the powers of the surplus of carcinogens apparent in pot.
To the Government: What does it matter if it kills you faster? It's still your choice. Just like eating a lot of donuts or sugar, or not exercising, or sitting in the sun too much, or not getting enough sun, or slicing wrists for attention, or licking the doorknob of a porn shop, or the potential danger using cellphones and laptops on our laps. These are just the modern methods of population control, which the world is desperately becoming in need of in my opinion. Why not take that in stride with economic incentive?
EDIT: There are some studies that say that cigarettes give more cancer. Nicotine is a co-carcinogen, possibly enabling a vaster amount of compounds in cigarettes while THC in cannabis has been found to actually inhibit carcinogens.
I have been becoming more interested in this topic, so I'll be trying to find more links.
EDIT 2: Not to mention that nicotine is physically addictive, thusly increasing your chances of cancer/death because you're more likely to smoke more often with cigarettes.
An interesting article, though hosted on what would seem to be a far left site. I'd like to try to find a source of information that could be much less prone to bias.

I'm sick people using the argument that weed isn't physically addictive as a reason why it should be legal. It's still addictive, and we all know at least five people who have an intense psychological addiction to it. It makes you lazy, it makes you fat, and it has carcinogens. I'm also sick of the argument that since cigarettes are legal, weed should be too. The government has been slowly moving towards a ban on regular cigarettes for the last three decades, not to mention increased sin taxes on them, and expensive lawsuits designed to bankrupt the cigarette companies. You wanna smoke? Move to the damn Netherlands.
Although I don't smoke, I'm all for legalizing marijuana for two reasons:
1) It can be regulated and taxed to high hell. If the government needs to make some scratch for infrastructural expenditures, for example, a hell of a lot of money can be made by taxing weed and selling it legally. Judging by how much people I know who smoke (quite a few) like doing so, I get the feeling that they wouldn't mind paying.
2) As some comedian who escapes me at the moment put it: Hippies won't have anything left to talk about.
Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

My primary argument is that if people do it and it has no outstanding negative effects outside of the user, then there shouldn't be a problem with it. What one directly does to oneself which has no or very limited effects on few others in most cases shouldn't be mandated by law. I hate cigarettes, but it's the same thing them. You wanna smoke cigs, fine, but keep it to yourself. Smoke in your house or outside. Don't smoke around kids or the sick. Government can tax the hell out of it if they want (and should). You should be able to grow your own small amount for personal use.
It makes people fat and lazy? So what? That's their issue and their choice as are the other aforementioned items on my previous post, not to mention that I don't see much correlation with the fat thing. You tend to eat more, but weed boosts your metabolism too. It's not hard to snack on things that aren't terrible for you when you're high, you just have to have decently healthy foods/snacks on hand before you smoke. The laziness is unavoidable mostly, but I know some people, including myself with the right amount, that are able to focus better under its influence.

You know, in another 2 weeks no one will care about Michael Phelps anymore and this whole thing will be over anyway.
You know, in another 2 weeks no one will care about Michael Phelps anymore and this whole thing will be over anyway.
Anymore or again?
The dude is an amazing athlete and a champion of the sport of swimming fast. People care that he swims fast for a few weeks every four years. One week after the Olympics ended, no one cared about Michael Phelps. It doesn't diminish his achievements, its just that they aren't necessarily the most talked about topics.
If you ask me, large endorsements are wasted on Olympic athletes from obscure sports no matter how amazing the people are at their events.
The story with Alex Rodriguez is a much bigger deal because he plays in the most popular sport in America and has been considered one of the best players in that sport with potential to become the single greatest.
