Yes, the Grammar Police is after the word "got". I really don't care, because "got" isn't destroying the English language.

Language is constantly evolving, so rules of the English language are never permanent.

"Got" has always been considered a garbage word as far as I know. Think of all the other verbs that "got" and its forms replaces. In general context it is not too big a deal, but in writing it's a brutal faux pas.

Using the word "got" was an automatic F in one of my high school English classes.

It's really amazing to me how poorly some people can write.

You often see someone type an entire paragraph worth of shit in a single sentence with no punctuation whatsoever. Not being a good typist is one thing, but there's no excuse to be older than 10 and not understand that sentences require periods and occassionally a comma or two.

The only context where I wouldn't have a problem with the word "got" is on a sports call, like "He got it!" when someone catches a ball. I mean, its on the fly and barely egregious.

I'd say they have bigger problem's on there hand's. I can think of two such problem's off of the top of my head.

Yes, I was being facetious in the above paragraph.

In general language, I don't like "got" and other such garbage words, but I use them. In debate or applied writing, I try to avoid it. Same with contractions and other semi-accepted colloquialisms.

Basic grammatical structure and proper spelling I try to employ at all times.

Judas Priest: Which one is correct?

A. You have another thing coming!

B. You got another thing coming!

Neither. It's "You've got another thing coming." Both have and got are used.

Forget this.

The Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar has to be the douchiest name ever.

It should be the Society for the Promotion of Well Grammar.

Obtain.
Retrieve.
Acquire.
Possess.
Recieve.

I suppose I can see why they want to eliminate "got", as there are probably even more synonyms than the ones listed above, but without the word "got", certain phrases would be unnecessarily inconvenient; "Got it!" would become "I comprehend the complexities of your instructions.", and "Gotcha!" would become "It appears that you are within my grasp."

Now we are just talking like an intellectual person.

I still prefer "got".
