Just so everyone knows: I didn't reply to any PMs sent out about this yet. I probably did get them, though.
If you need a reply on anything, just let me know.

Okay, I'm sure everyone is under the impression that I have it all under control, but I still could really use some ideas. I've got a general idea of where to go with this as it is, but the absolute last thing I want to do is go through all this trouble and find out that nobody wants to do it and only 2 people are gonna show up. It's not too late to stop now, but if it does get too late and it falls apart, I'm gonna be pissed.
There's enough intrest in it that I'm going forward (I'm gonna be checking out hotel prices sometime next week), but I still need to hear from people. I need input.
"Input input innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnput!"
So please. Talk to me here. Even if it's just a "Yeah, whatever you're doing is fine". Allright?
(random Johnny 5 moment brought to you by me, who is certain the only thing that image will do is derail things. But oh well)

I'm excited for this. At the same time, I really have no suggestions. I'm not very familiar with renting areas for things of this nature, essentially a mini-convention of sorts. Hotels have areas in which to have functions or at least hang out, right? Halfway decent hotels, I imagine, but that's where splitting up the price will come in.

Oh, yes. We will not be doing this in a Super 8.
Bunch of guys, renting a room together in a motel...that's just...well, yeah.

Usa,
What possible locations are you considering now?
For hotels, there are "block rates" this is what you do when you have a wedding. You get the price locked in and then they won't change it over time.
Also renting a room at a hotel isn't very expensive. Most hotels have a few ball rooms, but they also have smaller meeting rooms. Depending upon how many people come, that could be discussed.

I wonder how much it would cost to rent a few LCD projectors for video gaming in a conference room.

Yeah, I'm thinking book the hotel as per GP's suggestion, and book a conference room. We don't need a ball room, we just need a place for a bunch of geeks to listen to Guns N Roses and play video games

Central and Eastern Mass. There's a couple of nice hotels around my area (one has an indoor water park, even). I might go more east just to give Syd a better chance of getting here, though.

It won't help you.
The formula for calculating the minimum age required is as follows:
Required Age >= hacker + 2 years
You will have to grow twice as fast for two years to be eligible.

Better call up Kami and see if you can use the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. If Popo answers then hang up.

That's funny, I'll probably be in MA in August (I live in Sweden). It will probably not be close enough, and I rarely post here anyway. Just a funny coincidence though.

I checked out a couple of nearby hotels.
One of them is, well, awesome. They just added an Indoor Water Park in, and they have a couple of "party rooms" that they could rent out to us. There's also an arcade, the overnight rooms were cheap for a nice hotel...and did I mention the indoor water park? The only real downside is that if we get a larger amount of people, we may not all fit in the room (the capacity is about 20 people), but from the PMs I got I guess we should be fine. They're gonna work up an estimate and send it to me.
The other is...well, a bit more formal than I'd like. It's nice, and a bigger room, but doesn't seem to be as accommodating to our anticipated needs. Plus, they're probably gonna be booked solid during the summer weekends (Wedding season), and at the price I was thrown, it's not gonna be reasonably costed unless all of a sudden this thing grows to 40 people.
Both places said that no outside food or drink was allowed, and that they could get whatever we needed. Including alcohol, if desired, which means that the under-21s are kind of screwed in that respect (keep in mind that we'll probably be renting at least one hotel room as a sort of quiet retreat away from everything and/or a place for people to crash, so if you wanna sneak in a couple beers and get buzzed, by all means. But don't do anything stupid. This is assuming the group as a whole approves the drinking thing). Plus, they can rent AV equipment for us to use...this we can bring in ourselves if we want, but hey, if we have the option to get ourselves a bitchin' plasma to hook the Super Nintendo up to, why not?
Anyways, I'll keep posted. The places I went are in Fitchburg and Leominster, MA (about an hour or so west of Boston). If you're looking to go closer to your house, now's your chance. Find your local nice hotel, go in, tell them you're planning on having a small party this summer for a small group, and believe me, they will LEAP at the chance to help you out. If you do this, let me know, so we can compare some notes.

I'm going to start a west coast chapter.
Anyone around California is more than welcome to come over to my house, have some drinks and get your ass kicked at MvC2

See, the dream is to start small this year.
Next year, we grow it to about 100 people and rent out a convention hall.
Then we have a full-fledged SydCon, with thousands of attendees.
In 10 years, we should have these things happening all over the globe, including California, Chicago, Miami, Honolulu, Paris, Abu Dhabi, and Beijing.

What will be amazing is that Syd won't even know he planned all of these things and went to all of them because he has a split personality disorder along with insomnia and the first rule of Fight Club is you DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!
