What was her backstory? As I recall, her real name was Pamela Isley. She was the daughter of one of the Isley Brothers and she turned evil because she heard one too many terrible covers of her dad's hit song "Shout". So one time, instead of throwing her hands up and shouting like the song says, she became an evil botanist.

...is that correct?

Wasn't she some biologist specializing in flowers or something random that was supposed to be murdered but survived and became evil?

The Batman movie fucked up the whole backstory of Poison Ivy. Of course.

Dr. Pamela Isley was a botanist from Seattle who was the premier authority on almost all things plants. She was experimented on by Dr. Jason Woodrue, who was known in the comic world as Floronic Man, a half man/half plant creature akin to Swamp Thing except insane. Dr. Woodrue is in the movie as the evil scientist who "kills" Isley, but Joel Schumacher's way to introducing characters is to throw their names into a hat and pull them out for "Vaguely Familiar Villain #3" or something. The experimentation put toxins in her bloodstream that made her deadly to touch and immune to all poisons.

Sometimes she can control plans telepathically; sometimes she can't. It depends on what sources you look at.
