I used to play Magic as a young teen, but quickly lost interest in it when everyone I'd play had some unbeatable death combo that was impossible to defend against.

That game has a very limited set of cards, so it's hard to rate without knowing what's available. I will say that you have almost no non-wall, meaning you have almost no way to win. Also, Thoughtlace is absolutely terrible. I do vaguely remember that game however, and I would always try to build decks something like this:

4x Black Lotus
4x Dark Ritual
4x Hypnotic Specter
4x Black Knight
4x Drain Life
4x Sinkhole
Maybe some Terrors and I think some other creature I can't remember.

Argh I hated Hypnotic Specters and the douchebags who used them! Oh, and the ridiculously-should-be-banned Royal Assassin/Icy Manipulator combo that everyone used back in the day.

I could churn out some combos with this deck. My non-walls have power of 2 or less, which means Tawnos' Wand can target them. I could enchant my Will-O-The-Wisp guys with Unholy Strength. My Clones are primarily used for cloning non-walls or opponent's creatures. I'd only clone walls if I needed defense badly (dueling against Guardian of the Tusk deck).
