So if you haven't heard the MN Senate elections were a lot more exciting than the Presidential elections. Republican Norm Coleman led Democrat Al Franken in the race by around 200 votes, but it was still to close to call. Now, the recount is underway. Who will the winner be?

What do you think of this? Was your Senate race this exciting in your state? Are you good enough, smart enough, and doggone it, people like you?

I'm neutral on this. I don't care either way and I'm not enough of a Franken fanboy to pretend to be. However, I do think that if Al wanted to make this an extended joke, he did a good job. If he does end up the winner, I know Franken is competent enough to do his job. If not, I'm pretty sure he'll run again.

You should have seen the attack ads on both parties parts. They were ridiculous. Most of them focused on Franken "not being fit for office" because he was "angry" and "supported the porn industry" while Coleman came off as the "Wholesome, down to home, Minnesotan." Franken's ads did the same, but I saw more of the "Franken is the only candidate that will do this.....(fill in the blank)" I really hate to bring this kind of stuff up post election, but I just heard about it on the news. From what I hear, all three candidates were qualified for the job, so I'm not bothered either way.

Side note: I met Franken at a local coffee shop, he was a really nice guy, even stopped to take a picture with my girlfriend. Anyways, all the while he was speaking, I couldn't get the Stewart Smallie episode with Michael Jordan out of my head.....

I love any situation where all of the "don't vote, your vote doesn't matter anyway" people get their foot shoved in their mouths.

Don't know enough about the recount situation to say to say much about it. Limbaugh and the talk radio crowd are screaming bloody murder over ballot boxes appearing under mysterious circumstances, but I haven't bothered to check out whehter or not it's true.

Franken's a dyed-in-the-wool liberal democrat. You can pretty much count on him to tow the party line. All I know about him politically is what I've read in his books, which are decent. Hell, you guys elected Jesse "The Body" Ventura governor, so why not have Franken?

It would push the democrats just a bit closer to that fillibuster-proof majority though, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

I remember eight or ten years ago Franken wrote a book about himself running for president, winning, and then failing miserably. For the interview he had promoting it with Conan, he basically said he would eventually screw-up any political job he would ever win. That's why I've found just the existence of his candidacy hilarious. Coleman's people should have done some research and gotten some video of that interview.

A lot of the campaign, especially on Coleman's side was pretty disgusting. Then there's the recent ballot-stuffing, which seems questionable to me - like finding ballots in a car a few days after the election. That just automatically raises eyebrows...

This is very true. The worst one I saw was this ad with a little girl slamming Franken. I thought that ad was very juvenille and almost high-school in nature. I should really see if I can find some of the MN senate political ads online somewhere...

I heard about that on the news too... Pretty surprising and a bit scandalous. Either way, I'm excited to see what the outcome will be.....

It's been de-bunked on all major news networks that aren't starving Fox News anchors. Hell, even the guy working for Coleman who brought it out retracted it:

Franken's pretty knowledgeable about government, but I immediately wrote him off after looking at the polls that had him way behind. The only thing I really know about the campaign was the whole tax thing which just proved to be Coleman's people lying. I don't know enough about either candidate, unfortunately.

Interesting. Although, I remember an interview of an election official who defended it by saying that the ballot box was locked and secured for the entire time it was in the car. That might have been during that transport period mentioned in the article though...

Yes, it is a very interesting situation as a whole. It is amazing to watch my vote be such an important vote here in MN. The vote margin has decreased even further as it looks like Coleman only leads by 174 votes after 18% of the recount. It sounds like the official final vote totals won't come in until the end of the year. Very fun to watch indeed.

Docinsano, you did not choose that as your avatar, you had to have found that randomly. I used to play Vegas Stakes with my grandpa on rainy days. I always trusted that character's tricks because I thought he looked really cool.

Heh, I'm surprised someone caught onto where that guy was from..... actually, I didn't find it randomly. I took a screenshot of Vegas Stakes to get it.....

...Now back to the recount...[/derail]

I don't really like Al Franken's politics at all, but as someone with mild political aspirations, I'd still kinda like to see him win. I mean, if a guy who's made bestiality jokes can get elected to office, so can I!

Just so ya' know Syd, I was pushing for you in this presidential election:

What the hell are they teaching you kids in school nowadays? You CAN vote for whoever you want. You could write in Syd Lexia if you wanted to. He probably wouldn't win, but you could vote for him.

Then you went and failed your own presidential litmus test:

And mtgrnwdstar, why the hell would Bush know what the shocker is? No American President should EVER know what the shocker is. That should be part of our vetting process. That should be the first question the moderator asks at the 2012 debate: "Do you know what 'the shocker' is?"

If you answer yes, you're done. No presidency for you.
