There are two family-run convenience stores right by my house. Twice a week, I go into one of them to buy one $1 quick pick for the Mega Millions. That's all I really want from them, but each time I go in I always end up buying a bottle of soda and candy as well, not because I want it, but because I feel like a dick buying just a lottery ticket. They don't make any money off lottery tickets and those stores are their livelihoods, so I feel compelled to buy something else as well.

I buy all the things I need from my local convenience store. It' a good thing because they know and trust me and even let me take shit when I'm broke cause I always pay them back. I do feel like a dick when they call me to the front and make everyone else wait though. I feel way better about supporting a locally owned business who charges a little more than shopping at the faceless heartless mega chains that surround their tiny store. Smile

Wow it doesn't take much for you to feel guilty. You wouldn't be doing anything wrong and you feel guilty? Shit, I only feel guilty after I deliberatly too something cruel or mean.

...They make a lot of money of lottery tickets. They get a share of every ticket, a share of the profits, and a lot of overhead is covered by the state. There's a reason the lottery tickets are one of the most prominent things in the store.

I know they get a share of winning tickets they sell, didn't think they got a share of sales.

He feels guilty about buying something so insignificant. I think.

Myself, I do this when I'm only buying like a dollar's worth of stuff, but don't have any cash. I'll buy some stuff I don't really need so it's not costing the store more than their profits to use the debit card machine.

Chain stores, like Honey Farms and stuff, I'll do this though. In fact, I'll tell the clerk to do debit and not credit because it costs them more. They usually laugh at that.

At my store, I believe we get 5% of the sales from lottery tickets.
I don't mind people who just come in, get a ticket, and head off. Heck I prefer it that way.

I prefer local businesses. I either have a choice to go to a Sheetz or a local coffee shop run by this awesome married couple for my coffee. While the Sheetz coffee sells for like a dollar a gallon, the stuff at the shop tastes great but costs a little more. I eventually went there so often and brought new customers that I got to be pretty good friends with their family, and they give me free coffee or food whenever I'm in there. It's nice to know that instead of horking down coffee that's going towards a Fortune 500, I opted instead to help out a nice group of people trying to do something they enjoy.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Yes, and because it's a small business.

If it was White Hen, 7-11, or Cumberland Farms, I wouldn't give a shit.

Actually, lottery tickets really don't make much. You make virtually no money unless people win. My boss had looked into doing it, but it's a gamble for store owners.

In pa I know that Convience stores make money off of the Tickets, a good bit too. That is for the PA lottery tickets though, not sure if they make much off of powerball. That is why here you can get them at convience stores, grocery stores, beer distributors, tobacco shops, some greeting card shops I have seen have them, newstands, there are even a few family restaurants, or diner like places that sell them. Also, they have automated machines for the scratch offs and a few others in some larger stores, or in the slot casino's at the horsetracks. At any rate, I get the guilt, but what you have to take into consideration is your finances as well. If you can afford it, cool, go for it, if it is digging into you, then, well it's your call. It is commendable though that you care.

Lottery tickets only win because so many people lose. How do you think your megamillion ticket gets to 200 mil? Its cause the last few games the entire country spent a small fortune trying to win and failed. If you cheat, the system is undermined and the lottery ceases to be a way to win money.

Also, I hate you.
