The internet is a different place since the first time I logged on in 1998 and the first time since i logged on at home in July 1999.Its been nearly 10 years since I first logged onto the net. My first site was of course NBA.com,since I was a huge basketball fan at that time. Now it is realgm.com which is implanted into my brain to check everytime i log onto the net like other people have for main sites that they go to.SydLexia is turning into one as well.
The net has changed alot. From AOL,Yahoo,56K dialup to Google,Youtube,Myspace and WiFi it seems now that the internet has lost some of the magic it once had. I guess this is in large part to all those venture capitalist's who went bust but left behind with them the technology that we now enjoy in today's internet world so cheaply. I am glad advances have been made, but it seems that the internet is so widely used now that its impossible to get the kind of stuff that you use to be able to get from it or enjoy it in the same way.
I dont think we should go back in time and maybe I am being nostalgic, but the easiness in getting on the net is now at all time high where anybody can get on with relative ease. The influx of users who bring nothing to the net is at a alltime high as well. These are mostly people who log onto facebook and myspace and post useless and pointless bulletins along with an insane amount of pictures that somehow takes away the magic that pictures have when they are digitialized on the net. I remember being lucky back in the day to have someone who had a scanner or digital camera and upload 2 or 3 pics online. Now you have people who post them into the thousands and parade them on these social media sites. I am not against pictures, I just dont care to see pictures of stuff that the user thinks is clever and unique when its just a waste of space,my time and bandwith. There should be a limit of like 10 or 15 on these social media sites.guys are normally good about this but has change after seeing girls who uploads pictures into the 100's, girls are the main culprits in this because women loves pictures, all the power to them I guess, its just highly annoying to myself.
The day of meeting women off the net has now soured somewhat. Its easier to find women on the net thanks to myspace, but you now have a huge amount of online competition of guys who message these women everyday wanting the same thing. You also have the influx of child predators who have used the net to basically scare off alot of people. That has been an issue since when i started logging on, now we have adult women who are afraid to meet people in public because of the datelines and other news journals that have ruined what the net use to be by overly scaring people. This is a broad generalization, but it seems pretty close to the truth.I know we have places like EHarmony that are more popular, but I am talking about where you could find a chick and get laid.
Places like Napster,KaZaa and Bittorrent now have a huge spotlight on them that has ruined the hacking/piracy aspect that made the net fun,now we have watchdog groups who are gungho about copyprotection and tracking people down to make examples of them, knowing people are just going to continue to pirate. Piracy has been going on since the 3.5 floppy days and is one of the key doctrines in what the net is for, for sharing information and files enjoyed by computer insiders. Luckily places in Sweden and the Old Soviet republics are not letting the good fight get away but are slowly faces the problem the net has in American, over exposure, a thing that America is known for.
I would say the modern net's golden years was 1997-2002, the massive influx was 2003-2006 and the final nail in the massive overexposure happened sometime in late 07 and early 08 where people would check myspace, facebook and digg religiously and offer little else exept empty filled comments that are trying to be clever

I'm really surprised the counter culture didn't invent their own internet off the grid.

Unfortunately, I think I'm still stuck in that time. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it just seems like everyone else is filthy rich because they (particularly people at school) have iPods, cell phones, scanners, high-speed internet, and digital cameras - while I have none of those things. Heck, the only "advanced" thing I have is a "webcam", and even then it's not supposed to be a webcam (I downloaded a program that lets you use a PS2 Eyetoy as a webcam). I'm guessing one of the main reasons why I feel so technologically primitive is because both my computer and my type of internet (dial-up) are more than five years old. I can't even download more than one song at a time from iTunes because it takes more than half an hour just to download one - and that's if I don't have any other programs open.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what Vint Cerf was going for. Cracked Photoshop copies and porn.

I remember when myspace was alright, around 2003-04, now it's just one big steamy pile of internet shit. The trashiest place on the internet. Also, hotmail, everyone used to have one, including me, until my email was loaded with spam. That's when I said "fuck it" and got a gmail account. My experiment with yahoo answers has shown me how many stupid people use and abuse the internet.

Phones and the internet should require an intelligence test before allowing use.

Indeed. Let's collaborate and make "The Internet/Phone competence test" and put it in front of every web page so the 'tards can stay on myspace.
