Back when I gave a shit about what my top 5 bands were, Rush was my #2.
Now, I realize that Geddy Lee doesn't have the most likeable voice in the world, and for some his voice makes people flat out hate the band. I always thought it had a folky-elfish feel to it (which I think fits the 2112 vibe and the like).
But Rush is not about the singing. Rush is about the fact that when they arrived in the music world, it was God in the form of Bass playing, Drumming, and Guitar playing. Well, OK. Alex Lifeson isn't regarded as the greatest guitar player ever, but that's only because he has Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page and the like to compete with, and unfortunately the only people who would put Alex above those guys are die-hard Rush fans.
On the other hand, Neil Peart is regarded as the greatest Rock Drummer ever. And Geddy Lee, well perhaps not the greatest bass player, but he's certainly in the top 5.
I could very easily turn this into a TL; DR, but I'll save any additional thoughts for the oncoming discussion.
Favorite Album: Hemispheres
Favorite Records (or Songs): One Little Victory, Tom Sawyer, La Villa Strangiato

I was listening to the radio last week I think, and they had a program with the evolution of Rush. Some really interesting stuff about the band and the music too. It was a trip. And don't slam Geddy Lee's voice. He has amazing range.

I just made a topic about this in the Irish Confetti forums: My thoughts:
TITLE: Rush is the greatest band ever
And I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
Best album: Tie between Moving Pictures and Grace Under Pressure
Best Song: Limelight
I for one love how they're able to constantly change. Fly By Night doesn't really sound like Grace Under Pressure, but they're both amazing records. Their musicianship is amazing, and having seen them live, I can say that they really are the greatest rock band ever, in terms of success, musicianship, songwriting ability, etc.
This topic is dedicated to original Rush drummer John Rutsey, R.I.P.

Rush is a gift from the Rock Gods. They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, damnit.
Favorite Songs: Vapor Trail, Limelight. I really like Geddy's Christmas single with the Mackenzie brothers, Take Off!
I have a VHS of them in concert, its from the blazer suit, short hair Geddy era. I cant remember the nae.

I thought it was about 'Rush Rush' by Debbie Harry, as featured on the Scarface OST.

I hate to bring an old thread back from the dead, but Rush is amazing. I'm about to listen to Moving Pictures. Three of my favorite songs are on that disc: Tom Sawyer, Limelight, and YYZ. YYZ is a pretty fucking amazing instrumental.

No shame in bringing this thread back from the dead. Yea, "Moving Pictures" takes the booby prize for me. I'd like it more if the studio versions of Vital Signs and Witch Hunt weren't so terrible.

Rush is great.
That being said, my favorite Rush album is 2112.

Enh, I love the title track, Something for Nothing and Bangkok, but the rest is filler to me.

Moving Pictures and 2112 are great albums.
Rush seems to be one of those things people love or hate, though I don't know why it must be so extereme with them. Neil Pert is the fuckin man, end of story though.

I love Rush, and not in that ironic hipster sort of way. I think that all of their members are talented musicians, and they've got some good song-writing abilities. That said, I'm not a fan of their mellowed-out stuff later in their careers. I liked the s/t and Fly by Night albums the most.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

If I ever hear somebody say that they do love Rush in an ironic hipster way, I will punch them. As I'm sure any other fan would.

Alex Lifeson is a much better guitarist than both, ESPECIALLY Halen.

Rush may not have the best guitarist, but their drummer is amazing. Plus Geddy's bass skills more than make up for it. Actually, the whole band is great, they work as a team and no instrument gets left out. My favorite songs by Rush are usually the ones with a lot of synthesizer. I just can't get enough synth sound. Geddy Lee's bass style paved the way for bassists like Les Claypool. Rush is fucking amazing. Fuck the RnR hall of fame, that place sucks. I'll make my own hall of fame and build a huge statue of the band rockin' out.
