Reagan apparently once asked Gorbachev if he'd help America if it was attacked by extraterrestrials. Gorbachev agreed, and Reagan told Gorby that he had his back too.
Silly? Perhaps. But it was a popular hypothetical with the 40th president, who often mused that no culture on earth is so different from another that there is no common ground between them. Unfortunately, we as a species are often weak-minded, jealous, hateful, and set in our ways. Reagan often opined that it would take something of a great magnitude, such as intergalactic threat, to unite us as a planet.
The subject was later explored, somewhat more cynically, by sci-fi author Harry Turtledove, whose Worldwar series takes place in an alternate timeline where aliens invade Earth in 1941. The first novel was published in 1994, shortly after Reagan announced that he had been diagnosed in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

+50 coolness points for mentioning Ender's Game <3. One of my favorite novels.
Just remember what happened to all the alliances after the alien threat was ended.

If humanity can't stop fighting long enough to fend of a martian attack, then we deserve to die.

Oh that wacky Reagan and his alien threats; I was watching a show on History Channel not too long ago about how he'd put references to aliens in pretty much all his speeches, his writers would polish them and cut those bits out before sending them back for approval, then Reagan would send them back once again, largely approved but requesting the alien references be reinserted.

I want to see "Reagan and Gorbachev conquer the Martians!" made into a graphic novel, then a movie. Also, they should take certain small things from the book and not put them in the movie to piss of some of the fans of the book.
Seriously, tough, isn't this idea what the main plot of Watchmen is about? Ozymandius make it appear as though there is an extraterrestrial treat so the Soviets and U.S. start to work together, right? Reagan and Gorbachev are basically saying that if somebody teleports a squid in New York then they will work together to fight any other squid.

That's not really true. I have a couple of books comprised of Reagan's speeches and personal letters. One of them, "In His Own Hand" contains copies of the physical documents. It was certainly an idea that fascinated Reagan, but it not something he was all that interested in putting speeches. He very much did enjoy posing the question to people though, and hearing their thoughts on the matter. Similarly, there was a joke he used to love to tell everyone about an optimist and pessimist which he also never used in any official speeches. He may have told it at one of the press corp dinners though.
As for not changing speeches, that's not true either. According to former Reagan speechwriter Peter Robinson, Reagan would sent a writer's speech draft with TONS of notes. He would cut stuff, add stuff, and change around phrasing. I have his book lying around somewhere, but damned if I can find it. I believe he had a couple scans of speeches in there too. George H. W. Bush, on the other hand, sent back very few notes on speeches, to the point where his writers sometimes wondered if he even read them.

Yeah, I have the same book, Syd is correct.
The high involvement Reagan had in the writing process of his speeches is incredibly impressive, especially compared to today when the speech writing staff does almost all the work.

I have actually read those books, they aren't so great from a literary perspective but they are good fun as most "what if" scenarios are.

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be *the actual* El Guapo! |

I wonder if Reagan was still able to see Independence Day. I have a feeling he would have liked it.

Cattivo, you never let us down. I love it.
I always gain respect for presidents who have a greater part in their speech writing and I must say, I've gained a lot of respect for Reagan over the past few years with the more I find out about him, particularly from his handling of the Air Traffic Controller strike.

Heh, I should take a photo of the bookshelf in my place with all my Reagan books, and audio cds of speeches & radio shows. I think I have about ten books of both primary & secondary sources, and 3 or 4 cd collections.

Here's a crappy cell phone photo of them:
There's 11 books there, with two multi-volume cds sets, one of his radio addresses, and one of his speeches. There's also a cd that came with "Reagan's Path to Victory", that includes some more radio addresses.
