I've been trying to figure out how people could possibly get enough traffic from ancient vBulletin website to justify create spambot armies to patrol dead forums from the elder days.
Then I realized, they spam army overlords don't care that only ten people come here and nobody clicks on their links. It's all an SEO think. One way you improve your search engine rankings is by having other website link to your site. So the spambat armada is trying to get as many hyperlinks as it can on websites where nobody will notice them, to increase where they stand in search engine results.
This whole scheme is less stupid and far craftier than I first thought. But no less evil.

That might be a factor, but search engines do a good job of stopping spam sites from getting to the top of the search results. I haven't found a spam site on a search engine in years. I usually get Wikipedia links, journalism sites, and stores on my searches. All legit.
