I never beat it without the invincibility code either.

Neither did I, as a teenager, when I had it on an emulator. When I added it to my NES collection a few years back, however, I got through half the game thinking I'd entered the code correctly, but pretending I hadn't, before dying and realizing that I really hadn't. Several Game Overs later, especially in Stage 6, I finished it straight up, which I've gone on to repeat a few times since. Oh, and the escape sequence? No trouble for me at all.

The escape sequence is pretty fair. Not as easy the Metroid NES one, but probably doable within your first couple tries.

If you want an unfair escape sequence, play the arcade version of Gradius III. If you die, you have to redo the final boss battle and the excruciatingly slow obstacles to get to it. And the game has no continues at all.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

I, myself, went through a similar phase in 1997, even going so far as to theme my 12th birthday around it.

EDIT: Missed one:

A neat article, I must say. Never really played any of the old NES scrolling shooters, but as you commented it really is interesting to see how this game wasn't censored.

Etch has created his own Abadox Slayer-esque logo. Observe its mightiness.

Welcome back to the wrap party!

I'll be honest, it's not the best thing Syd's ever put out, but this is a classic:

I know I said no more vagina jokes, but what about clitoris jokes? Because I've got a pretty good clitoris joke, and it's this: the average guy has about as much chance of discovering this clitoris-like boss as they do of finding an actual clitoris - zero. Oh snap, take that, guys who aren't me. I totally found the clitoris, and I did it the same way I beat the original Metroid: trial and error, and lots of hand-drawn maps.

As for the game, it looks like death metal put to an NES game.

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.
