Long load times

Unskippable cutscenees

Crappy squad AI

Getting killed right after a checkpoint so when the checkpoint reloads you get killed again.

Enemies that single you out even if you are in a huge group

Games that are rushed and end up sucking and games that get delayed over and over and still end up sucking.

"Anybody who ever built an empire, or changed the world, sat where you are now. And it’s because they sat there that they were able to do it."

"Fighting in a basement offers a lot of difficulties, number one being, you're fighting in a basement."

Your pissing me off Cabrone!

Things that you can miss forever, especially when its not particularly intuitive. That is to say, theres no reason to know that your never going back or you won't have the opportunity again. FF9 is a huge offender here.

Arbitrary RPG systems tacked onto games of different genres. Sometimes, there's no need.

Required minigames, especially really hard ones or worse yet ones that come down to luck. Yakuza 2 suffered for this.

Games with good systems but no challenge. Once again, yakuza 2, with 56 different heat moves, 3 counters, dodging, multiple grapples, and 12 distinct weapon types. Total types of enemies, 3. Difficulty, nil.

RPGs with crappy systems. Morrowind immediately comes to mind, where the name of the game was manipulating the custom spell and item system for instant win, using a few tricks to max out skill levels, and carefully controlling your leveling in a very artificial fashion to keep up proper with the non-static environment. It kind of misses the whole point of leveling if all that does is cause golden saints to spawn on the road.

Bland worlds in RPGs. Planescape: Torment had so much to see, the sense that the planescape multiverse is so interesting, the multiple playthrough aspect, the mature story, the whole shebang. The witcher was suprisingly good, maybe because its polish roots made the familier dwarves and elves feel interesting or maybe the small details like the minutia of potions. Persona 4 has a style all its own. Neverwinter Nights 2 had... a gruff dwarf warrior, a wacky gnome bard, and a snobby elven wizard. You fight orcs, lizardmen, and other humanoid(read: easy to animate) creatures, the occasional gaint spider and some fire giants. Every fight is won by resting right before you get to the next room, running away so your partners auto res, and other manipulations of the system. Nobody notices your lvl 20ness, so the whole game falls victim to the big pitfalls of bad DnD games, lack of drama or sense of vermissilatude, bland creature/humanoid fights, and stereotype fallbacks.

Options that aren't viable. If blocking is going to be worthless, don't add blocking. If countering is a novelty, dont bother. Don't give the goddamn top spin, thats not a weapon.

Items that are a pain to use, or are big fat complex keys for like one dungeon. LoZ, with your iron boots and your owl statue rods, I'm looking right at you.

Q.T.E.s

They were new, fun, and fit in with the game that introduced them: Shenmue.

For every other game, they are pointless, and a stupid, almost gauranteed, instant death the first time you come across them. (I'm looking at you RE4 and Tomb Radier:Legend/Underworld)

Cutscenes that last more than 5 seconds, unskippable cutscenes, and games where you don't unlock anything by completing everything the game has to offer.

Sega may make retardedly difficult games, but at least it offers many, many hours of gameplay. I was sad that they actually made some of the A rank stuff in Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube HARDER than it was on the Dreamcast, but oh well.

RE1 on the Wii is a good example of this. With Jill, there's a glitch that lets you dupe grenade shells. Once you know about it, you can't NOT use because the game ammo starves you, but it makes the mindlessly easy.

This is why I never played the game as Jill. Not only is it harder with Chris anyway, I didn't want to be tempted to cheat.

I hate reaching an impossibly hard part in a game. Trauma Center 1, I'm looking at you!

Required mini games.

Like in Twilight Princess when you need to go snowboarding, fly the twilight bird, etc... These require a set of skills outside of the regular game and cut into the games progression.

The fact that there are no cheat codes for Contra III, whats that all about? those games are designed for cheating.

Ditto. That's probably my biggest one.

DarknessDeku wrote:
I hate when people whine about piracy being wrong but they still go to Gamestop to buy used games. Either way the developers and publishers don't get money for the game, so what's the point?

Easy. One is legal and one is not. One is reselling an existing physical item of which only a finite number are produced; and the other is duplicating one of those items and, among other things, devaluing them by making them available for free. Stop justifying piracy; you're better than that.

Also, I hate wiimote-only Wii games with terrible/finicky controls that have no excuse to not offer Gamecube controller support. For example, Sonic and the Secret Rings or Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz.

I have a question on that one, Syd. I see where you're coming from, if only because easy exploits like that are a sign of lazy programing (or bad testing.) But I never did understand why people complain that they *exist* (beyond the reasons I mentioned above.) I mean, if you don't like the cheat/exploit/whatever...don't use it. Granted it shouldn't exist in the first place, but its not like the game *forces* you to make use of it. The way I see it, its kind of like walkthroughs. I know that gamefaq.com exists, and that I can find an easy solution to the puzzle I'm stuck on...but I don't have to use them.

Geez, what does everyone have against the Top Spin? It's like a psuedo-melee weapon...!

Hard Corps didn't have any codes either, maybe they weren't calling it "Hard" for nothing....

The fact that cheats these days suck. What happened to the Debug modes? Infinite lives? Warp whistles? Shooting in two directions? Megaman's Hadoken in MegamanX? Breaking the game.

Cool stuff. And you had to do a bunch of stuff to pull it off. press long sequences in a rapid pace, rough a tough part of a level and reach a hidden spot, do a bunch of weird things.

Today? Beat the game and unlock this! Beat ____ with _____ and unlock this!

Lame.

Things I Hate:

-Owning a Wii. Don't get me wrong, the Wii is awesome, but shopping for games for it is a bitch, especially when the game you want is sandwiched between Barbie and Bratz. Way to make a guy that looks like Metal Jesus feel like a dick.

-Checkpoints before cutscenes, before a really fucking difficult boss. Gee, I love watching this damn cutscene every time the boss kills me. And this is a particularly difficult boss, so I think I'll be seeing this scene 50 times.

-Required minigames. One of the worst parts about Deja Vu was running out of coins in the slot machines trying to save enough for cab fare.

-people that play as Kirby in any Smash Bros game and do nothing but fly over you and try to do his stone move ad nauseum.

-save points that are a million miles away. Guys, I have a family and a job AND college courses. I can't spend all fucking night looking for a place to stop so I don't have to leave my shit on all night.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

That happened to me once when I had it on an emulator. The guy in the alley took all my money when I tried to hit him. Though I'd lost hope, I still went to the casino. Lo and behold, there was a quarter in the slot machine tray! All was not lost and I went on to finish the game.

I hate games that just throw you to the wolves in the beginning.

Case in point, the first 3 Final Fantasy games on the NES which is basically YOU'RE THE LIGHT WARRIORS FIND THE CRYSTALS AND SAVE THE WORLD and then they throw you out into the middle of a fucking field, not even giving you a vague hint where to go.

This also happens to me in most metroidvanias.
