I'm sure this has been suggested ad naseum in the past... but I've never seen a thread dedicated to it (although I've admittedly not dug very hard).
Any chance of a chat room for online users? I know precisely 0 about web design and bandwidth requirements, but would it be too logistically difficult to create a chat room for the website?

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

I think freenode has some irc servers and stuff but I'm not sure of how to set up an irc chat room and all that jazz.

You can add free live chat to any site at http://chatango.com/.

Looks like you wouldn't be allowed to set up a #sydlexia channel on freenode anyway. Only Syd as the owner of the site could do that per their policy:

But, yeah, freenode is pretty good. I've been active on their servers in the past and never had problems.

A chatroom would be awesome. If you can find the old Geocities HTML chatroom script you've GOT to me where you got it.

I could set up an IRC chatroom on DALnet or Efnet.

There is a better way.
Run it through Meebo as a room and link it as a web2.0 application. Free, simple, no extra registration.
I can even help you embed it if you need assistance. Then no one ever needs a client unless they want one. One word though.
Consider the implications of chat vs forums.
Forums everything everyone says is logged and out in the open. People tend to think about what they will write. If you make it a chat room, sometimes people can spew off fast and things get tense. I'm not advocating against it, just saying that it should be noted and realized that moderation may be needed on occasion.

Embedding? No. I'm not opposed to an official chatroom, but it will most certainly be offsite.

Because there's no reason for it to be a proper part of the site. Chat rooms aren't the novelty they were in the heyday of AOL. I like the idea of IRC because it's old school and it's also a nice little screening process. If you ( this is the general you. I know you personally know how to do it.)!can't figure out how to get on IRC, you probably don't deserve to be chatting with us anyway.

And now I know that you know that I know how to do it!
Whee!
I see your point though. I will participate no matter how it is done, so I await the channel server and name.
