You have a full week to submit your entry so you should be fine.

What is the best controller to use for NES games?

I have an old Gravis Gamepad (USB) that sucks really bad. I feel like I would be slightly less terrible with a better controller, and may get one prior to this whole thing happening.

I like the PS2 lookalikes, and the xbox 360 controller works really well, also.

I don't have it, but I would imagine this would be the best one ever:

I have one of these:

The left thumb control sucks compared to a nintendo control.

I find that the MS sidewinder gamepad works pretty well for NES games.

I also have a PS2 clone by logitech, but the d-pad on it is kinda crappy.

I have one of those, but I need a usb to gameport converter to make it work. Time to find an adapter.

Dammit, can someone throw me a bone here? I need to be ready for the big tourney! Should I do 25 FPS or 35 FPS, or what? I really would like to know. Oh yeah, 10 Johnsnow points for whoever chimes in first.

That looks pretty cool, I might buy it. I always wanted to try something like this, but I'm more of a software than a hardware geek, so I'd probably just mess up a perfectly good controller. And that adapter has the advantage that you can still use the controller for both PC and your NES.

But it's poorly made... =P I have/had that one for 7 years, almost now. Then, it broke down on me though and it doesn't recognise down and up unless I press on it with THE FURY OF AN ANGRY GOD.

That said, the emulator I'll be using is VirtuaNES 0.97, and my weapon of play will be my keyboard, 'cause I'm poor.

Maybe I'm lucky or didn't use it as extensively as you, but I've had mine for longer than that (I would guess 9-10 years), and it still works flawlessly...

Aside from being good for NES/SNES games, it's got a perfect button setup for Street Fighter as well.

I don't know, but if the video is choppy it may not be legit. I just want to have a nice smooth video. Maybe it doesn't make a difference. I just wanted to post a practice video or something.

I would just use the FCE Ultra and the built in recorder.

Compress using the Microsoft codec at 75 quality.

Then when you are done throw it into the Windows Movie Maker and save the thing with variable bitrate quality.

Don't change the FPS. Just let it be.

Then upload the video to youtube, it should be about 7-10MB for 1-2 minutes of video and quality should be equal to what I posted above. Which isn't crystal clear, but it isn't bad at all.

I think for the competition we should have a set method for all of this stuff documented.

If people agree with how I'm doing it, I can make a rules page on the Wiki with instructions.

Of course I'm totally open to hearing how others are making this happen.

Ok, fuck this control.

I was playing like shit.. you saw the videos. So I loaded up SMB on my NES to see just how shitty I am with the official controller. Well, I still suck, but I am so much worse with the fake controller.

I would be OK with a keyboard but they have a 3 key rule for the ones I own.

A new controller is a must prior to competing.

I'd like to join, but what the hell is an emulator? I'm new to old gameing. I do not have a camera either, so is this something I'd need one for? or are these going to be played on the computer? like I said I'm new

Wait. The Windows version has a built-in recorder, but the Linux version doesn't? Fuck. I've been trying to get FCEU to work with xvidcap, but without luck yet. Had I known that the Windows version comes with a recorder I would have thought about running it in wine sooner.

I'm in the process of uploading all 8 levels to youtube if you wanna see me play through the whole game.

For videos, I use JNES, record the gameplay as .jmv file then play it back and record a .avi using the Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2 compressor. You dont get all the frames, so it looks like the spread gun isn't firing 5 bullets, but it gets the job done.

And that will be nescesary for the tournament or whatver you want to call it? I want to join but I think I'm fucked.

Can you tell me what an emulator is? I had never heard of it before comming here.

Glad to see some canadians get respect here. Which part are you from?

I thought I'd start out with the shitty games off of the top 100. As you can see I got stuck at the part and was forced to reset. Fuck this game. My bad the mouse pointer is showing up. There ya go. Hope this video is acceptable enough for the competition.
