Thanks for posting that and great job! I was waiting for that right after I read its older brother the "100 greatest NES games."
Here are my thoughts.
-Fuck you I liked Super Mario All Stars. (though that might have to do with my NES breaking on me as a result of repeatedly leaving it on all night long and my parents never getting a replacement).
-Mega Man X2 is the best Mega Man game ever. It had a double blast super shot for christ sake! Speaking of Mega Man X, Zero doesn't give you his "Z-buster" in the first game, or at all for that matter, he gives you his sword (which was still awesome) he gives it to you in the 3rd game, if you kill Vile before you get to Doppler's fortress that is. But that's a different discussion.
-I liked the polygons in the original Star Fox. I loved the polygon bosses even more. That game was fucking impossible though, I never made it past the first "Great Commander" ship on the hard route.
- I agree Zelda III was the best SNES game, though Super Mario RPG was a close second. Although Zelda III had a slightly higher replay factor. Once I beat SMRPG, I didn't really wanna play it again for a while. Plus Zelda III had something SMRPG didn't...THE BOMBOS MEDALLION!

Yeah, great article. I have so many games to try out.
Although I do have one thing to say: I think Cybernator should be replaced with Metal Warriors. MW is in the same series, but it's way better. The storyline blows and the faux space shooter sequences were lost, but there were a bunch of different suits usable, you could get out of your suit and fly around to get into other suits, and the multiplayer was kickass. If you haven't played it, I recommend trying it out. It probably wasn't on the list because Cybernator is more common, and Metal Warriors is rarer. God, those multiplayer sessions of Metal Warriors on my friend's SNES were kickass.
I do have a question: Syd, if you do another "Top 100 Games" article, can I help out?
Also, sorry for the sort of fucked up post. I just spent 3 hours trying (without success) to balance my checkbook, and I'm wiped. But hey, at least I have more in my account instead of an overdraft, right?

Well, good job.
All the games I would've guessed were on that list. Also, I may get crucified for saying this, but I have never played Chrono Trigger in my fuckin' life.
Also, yes, I too loved Super Mario All Stars and Megaman X2.

X2, Earthworm Jim 2, and DKC2 are all definitely better games than their predecessors, but I guess being the game that started the series helped the original games rank higher.

It happens, you know? RPGs take forever to play, and we all have at least one major RPG we just never got around to playing. I haven't played any Final Fantasy game past VII for any significant amount of time. I have, however, played a fan-translated version of the original, harder version of Final Fantasy IV where Rosa can Pray, Tellah can Recall a random spell, non-Paladin Cecil has DarkWave, one of the elemental fiends is teh naked, and you can get the Porno Mag.

hey syd, did you know the page for 91: Sunset Riders isn't there?
Also, the fact that Chrono Trigger came in at #6 kicks ass- CT is an awesome game, and I find it hard to choose which is better between CT and Link to the Past

I kind of understand that, but then you might as well put the Original Mega Man game at the spot where Mega Man III is on the the Nintendo list and put Super Mario Bros. where SMB III is. Just because the game was the first of the series doesn't make it the best.
I have never played any RPG's other than "Link To The Past" and SMRPG. I respect those types of games, but I can never find the time to sit down and play them.
(By the way, sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, I couldn't find which forum we were supposed to put article threads in, despite the fact that "Feedback" says it right there)

I never played that game either.
But im sure this next statement will make someone's blood boil: I have never played a Final Fantasy game ever. I never had the luxury to buy/rent them, and now that im older I dont have the time/money to acquire them.
I bought FFIV about a year ago, but some friend borrowed it and hasn't returned it. Same thing w/FF Tactics. I bought them both for the GBA.
At any rate, I thought the article was well written but I didnt agree w/how MK3 was ranked SOOOO high.

I've never played any FF game either. In fact, the only RPG I have ever played by myself and beaten in its entirety (sp?) is Super Mario RPG. I did, however, watch a friend play through most of FFVII. Man, middle school was a good time for video games.

I agree, and I personally ranked the sequels higher.
I think I might have even had Super Adventure Island II higher than the original on my list.

Cool, now I dont feel like a total outcast on this.
I have played Dragon Warrior I, II, and III all the way thru for several hundred hours. I played Kingdom Hearts I + II. I played Shining Force I + II on the Genesis, but I was never able to play SF CD which is the one I really really wanted to play.

Gotta say, I've been a fan of tetris Attack for a while, and I'm glad your article got me playing it again. And Super Turrican is fucking awesome.

I enjoyed all of the Megaman X games equally. The first one has the best mavericks, the second was just plain enjoyable, and the third had Neon Tiger and a playable Zero.
And, while Zero is a much better character, you still have to give X credit for fueling one of the funniest anime stereotype spoofs ever.
Oh, and by the way, concerning space shooters, the Genesis had Thunder Force III and IV, which were both awesome. The forth game had some of the best music I've ever listened to on a Genesis system.
And Megaman 7 sucked, in my opinion. The scale was awkward, most of the robot masters sucked (except for Freezeman and Slashman), and the sound effects were absolutely terrible. Oh well, at least the 8th game and R&F were a little better.

How about a little love for Lagoon, a very underappreciated RPG IMO. I can see how it's not for everyone though.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

I don't think many people have. It's never mentioned as a classic SNES game. It feels a lot lot Soul Blazer, but with different battle mechanics. Some of the best music I've heard on the SNES, and that's saying something. It probably rivals Mega Man 2 in catchy music.

When I said I only played Mario RPG I lied. I played Earthbound too. Got all the way to the end and never beat Gygas because I didn't know about Paula's "prayer."
I like RPGs, but I also kinda suck at them. Therefore, I don't play them too often.

I was surprised Super Mario Kart and Star Fox didn't make the top ten. Hell, Star Fox was the very reason I bought an SNES. Before that, I was content with my Genesis and its sports dominated catalog.
Just with the NES article, I'm surprised by how much taste in genres can be subjective. I rarely played rpgs back then, so I never even heard of a lot of those games. I was too busy playing crappy SNES sports games like "Tony Meola's Soccer" and "Stanley Cup". I guess I was more of a Genesis guy. I basically just used my SNES for games that ported better on that system, like MK2, or for cool games that weren't available on the Genesis, like the aforementioned Star Fox & Super Mario Kart.

Star Fox is indeed ridiculously awesome. I was surprised Contra III didn't make Top Ten.
The SNES wasn't really known for its sports games. It had some good ones, but people seemed to prefer sports games on the Genesis.
