Nope, but it's been finsihed for about three weeks now. I'm just too lazy to take it back apart to take picks of the case. I'll try to get around to it this weekend, so I can finish the article.

You really think this market could support a fourth console?
Also, here's a question. If Dreamcast survived and Sega was still in the market, would Microsoft have even bothered to try and release Xbox?

Did you read the article?
The point at which history changes is when Sammy merges with SEGA, after Xbox and well into the planning stages of the 360.

I know. How does that change my hypothetical questions?

Okay to answer your question: "If Dreamcast survived and Sega was still in the market, would Microsoft have even bothered to try and release Xbox?"
Yes. Microsoft always has money to throw around on new projects. Why bother making a MP3 player when iPod already owns 90% of the market? Introducing Zune. Why make a smart phone OS when Blackberry already has one? Introducing Windows Mobile. It's Microsoft.
I think that if Dreamcast didn't drop out of the market so soon, the Microsoft Xbox still would have been released. I think it still would have still done just about as well. Most people who wanted a Dreamcast already had one by the time the Xbox and PS2 launched.
Let me ask you this question: "What would have happened if Microsoft agreed to make the Xbox play Dreamcast games when asked by SEGA?"

I'm not sure. I don't think there has even been a time when there have been four competitive consoles on the market, and that alone would probably make a company think heavily about one being released. I think you're right about Microsoft, they do have the cash to try anything. But even if Sega were interested in putting out a new console, I don't think 2006 (or even now) would have been the right time to do it, and if they did, second place to the Wii is pretty optimistic. If it were hovering around PS3's sales levels, I'd say the system would be a success.
Plus, to launch a Sega system, you gotta have a Sonic game. And they still haven't been able to define Sonic for last-gen games, let alone next-gen.
Finally, I'm still not convinced Sega can market their way out of a paper bag.
As for your question, I don't think much would have happened. You'd see the same trickle of games you saw with the GameCube, PS1, and Xbox when their successor systems that also played the older games came out. Some great last hurrahs, some crappy licenses, and then everyone moves on.

Interesting info, funny to look back on predictions and such and see how they panned out. The comments were pretty cool too.
I also read your Craigslist Posting Rules, the Batman bit was pretty funny. Nice work.

I wonder in terms of raw computing power in a standard high end desktop what percentage of speed has been gained across the entire system since that article was written. Benchmarks have changed over time, so it is hard to see a one to one relationship between new and old.

Well, for one go back and look at the FSB of the era.
The P4 400MHz was still being hyped as coming out soon. (Which I believe was the 1st DDR system, so it was probably 200MHz Double Data Rate. Which means 166MHz was probably standard. Even low end systems of today use 800MHz FSB. Not to mention, 2000MHz+ Hyper Transport.
So, even though speeds haven't shot up like they predicted, overall CPU power probably has.
Okay, I decided to hunt down a comparison from the best at the time of the article vs now:
PC Mark 05. (i7 980X 6 Core vs 1GHZ P3):
i7 980X = 38080 marks.
PIII 1.0GHz = 855 marks.
So in just that test alone the i7 is 44.5 times more powerful. (And, I believe PCMark05 is a single threaded app, it's just the last one to support the P3. If you ran that in all 12 of the 980s threads it would be 534 times more powerful.)
Next test I could find both in: SuperPi 32M
i7 980x = 5 min 13 sec
PIII 1.0GHz = 2 hr 10 min 6 sec
Wow.... 312 times faster!
Yet, by clock speed, the i7 980X is 3.33GHz. Which is only 3.3 times faster than the PIII 1Ghz. So, yeah, pure CPU clock speed doesn't really enter into it anymore.
According to the Moore's Law chart in that article, right now we should be between 64 & 128 times faster than the 1GHz PIII, I would say we are.. at least.

Yeah. I just write an article when something inspires me to. The problem is, that in today's age, everyone and their dog have article sites, so trying to find something new or different to do is quite difficult.
I mean why bother writing a top ten list that's been done 6,000+ times already?
Also, I am not the best humorist, so I cannot really do anything funny anywhere near the quality of Syd or Seanbaby.
If there are any articles or anything you guys want, just tell me, and I'll put some time into it.
