I'd be interested to know where you got that statistic from... To my knowledge, Super Mario Brothers 3 is still the best-selling game of all-time, discounting the original Super Mario Brothers because it came free in almost every NES bundle. SinceXBox has not even come to close to reaching the level of market share that the original NES had, I'm pretty Halo 2 hasn't outsold SMB3.

Now you did say highest grossing, not best selling, but I still find it hard to believe that Halo 2 would have beat SMB3 in this regard either. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure SMB3 retailed for somewhere between $39.95-$49.99 and Halo 2 retailed for about $49.95 originally. Since Halo 2 had much higher production costs, I'm at least pretty confident that it netted more.

You could be right, I'd just like a source on it.

sory that might be a falseity. the statistic i was refrencing was the highest grossing game on opening week. and at the time i think it still holds the the one and only game to do better sales than the movie buissness on opening week.
that and eb sales it was their top grossing sale strait throught the san andreas craze
i think the game that replaced was the expansion pack for halo 2

None of that changes the fact that Halo 2 is extremely marginal and slow-paced. For me, Halo 2 will go down as one of the worst multiplayer games ever made, if nothing else due to it being an FPS on an analog stick. It comes down to long-range sniper fests, circle strafe idiocy, bug exploiting and generally annoying gameplay.

Just in case you try to say anything about it, no, you can't do anything I can do on a mouse and keyboard with your analog stick.

if you have a slow modem
or you just dont like microsoft
you might not like this game
also if you like to think your good at video games but your not used to playing large enough of a croud to relize your not that good you may secretly resent this game ive seen it alot. people think they are good at video game because they beat all the one player games. Then they get beat by a ten year old in wisconsin who laughs at them
it makes them feel small which is why i think there is such animosity twords this game
it play just like a sci fi counter strike
oh and they sold mouse and keybourd adaptors so if that was your thing you could use it
i wasa better with the joypad
and if the game was slow
it may have been slow if you had a slow conection
multi player arenas purposly had 3 types of enviorments
wide open coridors (hall ways)
and enclosed room

all excluding the wide open spaces always had a least 3 entrances
for stratigic fast and constant gameplay
the only way i can see this game being slow is if you played of of the huge levels with not alot of peole
as stated above
the game is designed for canstant action
ive played games where i was the top of my team but the longest i ever lived was a minute give or take half a minute
with dual weilding and grenades it had sort of a statgy
use grenades in coridors and dual weild in open spaces
for wide open space you aspire to get a sniper or a rocket launcher

halo 2 was the first game to win an emmy
opening the ganre of video games into main stream media
which is good if you like have a lot of games to choose from

I think you fail to understand what I mean when I say "slow" gameplay. The speed of movement in Halo 2 is restrictive to the point of not allowing you to dodge another player's aim through any means other than making it difficult to draw a bead on them with a shitty analog stick. Besides, Halo 2 doesn't have stunts, like specialists does...3 different flips and 3 different dives, a roll move and wall climbing, for starters.

I'm sorry, Half Life multiplayer supports 32 players, that's twice the amount Halo 2 can have. Whoops, there goes that theory. Ever played a 32 player game on Specialists, with everyone running around gunning for you with assault rifles, flipping around the room and diving at you with double pistols (or should I say dual-wield so you understand me) and katanas, flipping off the walls and doing bullet time matrix shit all up in your grill? No. You haven't.

Counterstrike with sci-fi? Counterstrike is also a slow-paced game. I hate the way it plays. You can't even move and shoot accurately.

I'm really glad that you played Halo 2 better with the pad than the mouse and keyboard. How about you get a USB to xbox converter, hook it up to your PC and join up TS in a 32 player server? I'll join up too, and I'll laugh as I'm running in circles around you, kicking your gun out of your hand, taking it and shooting you in the back of the head with it.

The multiplayer areans have THREE types of environments, wowee! Specialists has office buildings, rooftops, parking garages, subway stations, the matrix lobby, a construction site, numerous windows and doors to dive through, ventilation shafts, skylights, hallways, wide open maps, you name it. Oh and it has about a million user created maps to create an infinite number of scenarios...

I haven't even gotten into the weaponry...Halo 2's repitoire of guns is laughable compared to TS's. In TS you've got 10 pistols alone. Ten different pistols, my friend, 3 of which can be used single or double. You've got shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, single-shot pistols, a machine gun, four different shotguns, melee weapons (knives that can be thrown or slashed with...try leading in three dimensions with your analog stick and watch as I laugh and shoot you in the face before you can react). Oh and the kung fu...weapon disarms...you'd be a bit in over your head there I think. Flying jumping 180 degree spinning back kicks. you know, stuff like that. Nothing that takes skill like in halo, like shooting rockets at people.

You want strategic, fast paced action? Specialists has a terrorist vs counter terrorist bomb defusal scenario teamplay mode, which is both fast paced and tactical. It's round based and you buy new guns based on the cash you earn from your kills. I for one prefer the psychotic pace of deathmatch, but to each their own. Or, for the lone wolf player, you've got Last Man Standing, where you pick your gear, jump into the fray and it's every man for himself. The last guy alive turns into bruce willis and gets naked, like the movie Last Man Standing. No, actually, you just win the round and are awarded 10 points, then you all respawn with full health and ammo and the fun starts again.

Halo 2 isn't constant action. Sorry. You don't know what that is until you've played Specialists.

But hey, if you like rocket launchers and getting in cool wicked sick vehichles like the "rhino", just keep telling yourself that the game won an emmy and continue to enjoy yourself on the most extreme FPS game ever made.

I never actually played Deus Ex multiplayer, so I can't attest to its quality of gameplay there. I just enjoyed the intrigue and plot of deus ex, I felt like I was actually playing the role of a guy who actually had an effect on the world I was in. Deus Ex probably had sucky multiplayer, to be honest, the system is a bit clunky. The draw for me was just in the RPG aspect and the effort put into creating a palpable atmosphere that suspended disbelief.

The video I linked you to is for a half life 1 mod. That video's not even that great. I'm working on getting my video uploaded, I'll try to post the link if I can (my friend's website died apparently).

Sadly, the developers of specialists have refused a half life 2 port. As far as half life 2 mods go, I wouldn't know which direction to point you in, plus none are really out right now that satisfy the craving for mayhem like specialists does.

But seriously, I think we're forgetting the true best multiplayer game of all time here.

Duke Nukem Forever.

I heart Murdar Machene and Syd.

And mcdusher, this is not the first thread you have done this in, but please no double posting. If you need to add something and you had the last post, well that's why God gave us the edit button.

Found a host for my TS demo. It's not much, but the song I picked for the video is very energetic.

For my money, I'd go with Guilty Gear X2 #Reload on the Xbox. (Yes, I gather that the Xbox isn't very well received around here, but whatever.) Guilty Gear is the kind of fighting game that you can play for hours on end and not get bored. All of the characters are unique (no pallete swaps! no recycled move sets! no clones from other games!) and the design is kookily Japanese. There's a character for everyone in Guilty Gear, from the trenchcoat wearing air pirate Johnny to the cross-dressing, yo-yo wielding orphan Bridgette. Guilty Gear is renowned for being one of the deepest fighting games ever, and the learning curve is steep. One of the best things about Guilty Gear, however, is that it retains its fun no matter where you are on that curve, so long as you're playing with opponents relatively near to you. I played this game for 8 hours straight one time with one of my friends. We used the same characters almost the whole time and we had a blast. He won about half the matchs and I won about the other half... good times!

If you haven't played Guilty Gear and you consider yourself a fan of the fighting game genre (espeically 2D fighters) you're doing yourself a serious disservice.

I like Guilty Gear X2, I play as Chipp or Jam. If it's the first guilty gear, I usually choose the guy with the bag on his head who's name I can't remember.

I also think Street Fighter Alpha 2 and 3 are great 2d fighting games for friends online.

The guy with the bag on his head is called Faust... unless you're playing an imported version, in which case his name is Dr. Baldhead.
