My parents are from Sicily. If I talked back as a kid, it was either the wooden stick on top of the fridge, my dad's belt, or a good old-fashioned smack. I'd be lying if I said I never deserved it, and I still think they're nothing wrong with hitting children once in a while, in appropriate situations.

All english decent here. born in england,raised partially, moved to canada.
as far as english parents go, i got beat a bit. most of that was just mindless bullshit from my father (but we wont talk about that) but I got the wooden spoon from my mom on a more then a few occasions. those things really sting.

On a serious note, there's nothing illegal with hitting your child. You can't use instruments, or exceed appropriate force (i.e., don't punch your kid in the teeth), but you can use open hand spanking, among other things.

You know, how in MMA, when the guy who got KO'd comes back to his senses, and tries to tackle the ref? Thinking a) the fight is still going, and b) he was fighting the ref.

I support smacking a kid in the face when they're throwing a fit in Hastings because their mom doesn't have enough cash to buy them God of War 2 and I can hear it in the fucking music section with HEADPHONES ON!

When I was little I got spanked a couple times, then I had to stand in the corner for an hour, then my parents sent me to my room. After all of those punishments I stopped misbehaving.

Unfortunately, people for some reason have a hard time seeing the "abuse vs punishment" difference between a pop on the butt and a smack in the face.

One is and always should be a proper way to disipline a child. The other should be automatic jailtime. And, if you don't know which is which you shouldn't be allowed to have kids.

one of my favorite street fighter characters is sagat. he has a projectile and an uppercut, like the other shotos, but isn't considered a shoto because he has much more defensive gameplay that involves keeping the opponent guessing and countering their attempts at gettign close.

here's an exerpt:

Sagat plays similarly to Ken and Ryu, with some notable differences. Foremost is his attack range: his low attacks and standing horizontal kicks have impressive range. In Street Fighter II, producing an array of alternating high and low fireball attacks can confuse and greatly damage an opponent. This technique is less viable in later games where projectiles do less damage, or can otherwise be avoided. In Capcom vs. SNK 2, Sagat's normal attacks, particularly his crouching fierce punch, have unusually high power and priority, making him one of the easiest characters to use effectively in that game. He is also known for his multiple-hitting Tiger Uppercut (Tiger Blow in the Alpha series.) which is similar to Ken and Ryu's Shoryuken/Dragon Punch. Tiger blow had low priority against Shoryuken, but the priorities of Tiger Blow and Shoryuken were equaled in Alpha 3. Sagat's attacks do much more damage than Ryu or Ken. Sagat's supermoves such as "Tiger Genocide" have great priority.

I think his point is that using wikipedia to "prove a point" is not terribly effective, although you are right in your assessment that spanking is legal in the US. I don't have the exact section of the MA laws in front of me, but I used to work for a rep in the Statehouse and this ban was brought up back then as well because the rep believed spanking should no longer be legal.

Believe me, if I thought I could effectively teach him anything, I'd try to perform other miracles, like curing blindness or ending poverty! I'd have to be insane to think some people around here can learn. I figured the link might interest some, as it had me. As far as spanking goes, the only issue I have is the subjectivity involved... what one person considers "reasonable force" may differ greatly from another.
