actually at the time sailor moon was just a dubbed and badly edited early morning cartoon. same with Dbz.

I think blame belongs with adult swim.

I can remember Anime begining as a "underground" fad back when I was in Jr high, which was back in 1992-93. That is when I was first introduced to such videos as Akira, Appleseed, Project A-Ko, and Crying Freeman.

So, you can't blame [adult swim], since it began in 2001.

Personally, I blame NBC.

It's all their fault, as they introduced american audiences to Astro Boy in 1963.

The problem with this theory is that most people, even today, have no idea that Astro Boy was any less than American made.

And, those are the same people that will be dragged out into the streets and shot, when my revolution comes...

That was a fucking joke up there. I just think it's funny that everybody keeps looking for a cause to anime. Was there a cause to ugly-ass color patterns in the '80s? Besides colorblindness? No.

I think I'm the only person who's genuinely interested in what started this travesty of a fad.

It's not worse than YoYo Ballz or Larry the Cable Guy.

No it's not. Larry the Cable guy is on his way out, and that Yo-yo fad lasted like, six months. This shit has been going on forever, and it's showing no signs of stopping.

I suggest we replace it with a Swedish fad. We can all listen to Mimikry, The Cardigans, Hjalle & Heavy, play hockey, watch rally racing, and be pretty.

I'll go back to living in my own world where Sweden's cool. You know where to find me.

Personally, I think that that fad would be equally as destructive as anime.

No it wouldn't. Who doesn't want more rally racing and hockey, and attractive people? Spanky? He hates everything. He doesn't count. Plus I'm already good at hockey, and if there were a hockey fad, I could just fucking destory all the kids who have only been skating for a few months. It'd be like the time when I went from Pee-wee to Bantam hockey. I was already 6'4" when I was 13, so when I went from a non-contact age group, to a contact age group where I was a foot taller and a hundred pounds heavier than most people. God, best time of my life. Seriously.

So what you're saying is that you would have no problem with the Japanese fads if you already liked sushi and anime since the early '80s and were a kickass amateur American sumo wrestler? Cool

So what if people overdid the Sweden thing? Would you not like that fad then?

Well, now we have what you hate. You don't hate the Japanese fad per se, you just hate fads that were beaten to death and then beaten some more.

No, I hate the Japanese fad more, because it is more annoying than any other fad I've been alive for.

I haven't seen any evidence of a Japanese fad ever. Just an eccentric subculture.

The obsession with Japanese culture is definitely not a fad. The definition of a fad is a fashion that becomes very popular in a culture, but loses popularity quickly... the obsession with Japanese culture has been ongoing for years...
Here's some examples of real fads:
* Beanie babies
* yo-yos
* Furby
* Rubik's cube
* Hula hoop
* Lava lamps
* Sea Monkeys
* Bellbottom pants
* Troll dolls
---> And one of the most recent fads in North American Culture:

(I took an advanced Sociology class "Collective Behaviors & Social Movements", we talked extensively about fads, and I even wrote a 10 page paper on Livestrong bracelets popularity in culture)

I'll pay real money to get a white band that says "power" on it. I saw one once at a Cubs game, but, alas, I passed it up. I've regret it ever since. Sad
