Because Sci-Fi channel didn't show anime before final fantasy VII.

I'm afraid you're incorrect Sir. FF VII came out in the US on September 7th, 1997. But anime had been running on Sci-Fi for at least a year prior, including the Robot Carnival Akira, Dominion Tank Police, Gall Force, Project A-ko, and Tenchi Muyo in Love (the latter of which aired August 26th, 1996).
As an aside, Sci-Fi's going back to showing anime.
