Does anyone know how I can get a .gif to display as my background on the desktop. Theres obviously something more to it then just right clicking and selecting it as a background. Like for instance Murdar's seizure inducing sig. My buddy put one on his computer and refuses to tell me how. Fuck him and his high and mighty horse.

Please wait until the 3rd or 4th post to call me gay Spanky. I'm sure you could tweak that last sentence but just hold off for a moment.

Assuming you're on a version of MS Windows, go to your desktop, right click, and choose Properties. Select the Desktop tab and then hit the Browse button. Find and select your desired background image and you're all set.

To have animated gifs, you have to have "active desktop" enabled, too.

It's horridly resource intensive and will make your computer run like shit most likely, especially if you stretch instead of tile.

Is it too early to call you gay? Yes? Ok then.

What animation did you want to put on your desktop?

Well it's the 4th post so you were free to do whatever you wanted. I wanted to post something similar to Murdars sig or something of Mario, but I have Vista and apparently active desktop has been removed in place of the new "gadgets" side bar. However I read that it's still possible if you use a .hta. However I have no idea how to change a .gif image into a .hta, or even make an .hta for that matter.

Try changing the file extension to HTA and see if that works.

Im ignorant when it comes to altering files and getting into code and what not, but when I save a gif it either lets me save it as a .bmp or .gif file. When i select the properties and check it out they are unalterable, and simply puting .hta at the end of the file name simply just adds it to the name of the file on the desktop or folder.

I've never actually heard of HTA before. If HTA is simply a different image type, then renaming the file might work. Most apps can read mislabeled files without any problems. For example, if you rename an MPEG file to be an AVI or a WMV, any video player will still read it correctly even though it's now mislabeled.

If HTA isn't an image type, it definitely won't work.

#EDIT: I found out what HTA is; it's basically the same thing as an HTML page. If you want an animated gif as your desktop, make an HTML page with the animated gif on it, then change the page's file extension from HTM to HTA. Then you should be able to load it as your desktop on Vista.

Try this:
Code:
<html>
<body>
<center>
<img src="" align="middle">
</center>
</body>
</html>

1. In the SRC (source) field, put the destination of the image i.e. C:/desktopstuff/image.gif
2. do all the code in notepad and then save the file as HTA instead of TXT.

Then you should be all set.

The damn thing only allows me to save as a .txt file or "All Files" whatever that means. This seems to be an uphill battle on a skateboard.

Choose All Files, then add the .hta extension yourself when you type in the filename.

When I choose all files it doesn't give me the option to give it a file name, just a regular name, I've come to the relization that Vista is the devil and should be blown back to the bowels of hell where it belongs.
