Whenever I flip on the Simpsons or South Park or pretty much any show that I'd want to watch, I'm bound to see an anti-drug commercial. And every time I do, I can't help but think of how shitty they are. Anti-drug commercials in the 80s were so much better, with their superb mix of facts, fear tactics, and "just say no". These days, anti-drug commercials have talking dogs and crappy animation that couldn't possibly hold anyone's attention... it's almost like the commercials are specifically designed to be ignored.
Where did things go wrong? Was it the two consectutive ex-druggies we elected to the presidency?

That's a difficult question. While we certainly tried well with schooling and law enforcement, little progress has been made. I would probably have to blame the weak governments in countries that produce the drugs, such as Columbia, and those that traffic it, such as Mexico. Also, if parents did a better job trying to spend more time with their kids, children wouldn't pursue drug experimentation as much.

Also, the attempt to strike drug users with paralyzing fear was not well-thought out. That advertisement about how buying any amount of drugs leads the money directly into the hands of the terrorists that blew up the World Trade Center was generally mocked by the public. Most people aren't worried about the $10 they spend on a gram getting to the terrorists.

They were better in the 80's, because we had Nancy Reagan heading the anti-drug campaign.
Now we have, god knows who, the Bush admin assigned.

I'm helping fight the war on drugs by burning up all that nasty marijuana and sucking it up so I can blow it out my window and out of my life!

Remember that special cartoon thing that aired in 1990 that had a bunch of characters from different shows on it, like Bugs Bunny, Michaelangelo, the Smurfs, and a bunch of others, and it had that kid who smoked weed?
I remember that being decent.

I tried to find that 80s PSA about the 2 guys at the hospital/rehab place, and the one guy is in there for obviously doing far too much heroine - he's all skinny and pale and looks dead, and then the song He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother by The Hollies comes on... and it's funny...
---> The point to that little story: I can't find that commercial ANYWHERE!!! If anyone can find it, embed it or link it PLEASE!

Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen that! We had to watch it in the 5th grade, but by then all those cartoons were *way* out so all the kids thought it was lame. I was just relieved it was better than the animated DARE movie.
Still, it's pretty surreal to see the world of drugs and beloved cartoon characters coming together like that.

there's alot of things I'd rather do than drugs. like, eating bread for instance. man...bread kicks ass. just ate five slices in fact. but onto my main pint
that video was actually pretty good. better than most of the other crap I've seen with horrible acting and people you've never heard of.

Hey, that reminds me: does anyone remember those anti-sugar PSAs that used to air on Nickelodeon? It involved some kid (I think it was a girl) getting hyped up on sugar, then she crashes and ends up in this dungeon of children who have all been zombified by sugar. Then someone hands her some vegetables and everything's better. It was weird.

No but I remember Mike Myers playing the hyper active kid on SNL, and his mom used to tie him to the Geo-dome. And, one time a girl gave him some chocolate and he went running down the road dragging the whole geo-dome behind him.
Isn't that kinda the same message?

Me too ^^
I hate those Above the Influence commercials, though. I'm rollin' a blunt while the commercial's on.
Not to mention if you have 5 different kinds of weed in your system, the commercials are AWESOME.

So you're saying that the best way to stop the spread of cocaine use is to snort as much of it as I can so that there's not any left for anyone else? Sounds like a plan. Besides, if I was coked up, I bet I could finally beat that Korean kid at DDR.
