I can't stand gyms. They're full of college guys who do one set of upper body workouts, then talk about lifting for an hour. I have a squat rack, bench, and weight in a spare room in my house, better than any gym. I also have a stationary bike in there, but I don't hit that up anymore, I stick with sled dragging for cardio. Sled dragging doesn't burn as many as calories as running, or using a stationary bike, but it works your lower body better than either of them, which is really good for your first few skating strides.

The most important part of weight training is move heavy objects around. If you can do that, and make gains, then everything else you get is just for convenience. Some of those things are really convenient, and I wouldn't reccomend lifting withouth them (squat rack), but you can make due without them.

Going at a punching bag is good cardio either way, you don't need any 'training', just keep a pace, and keep going at it. All that matters is keeping your heart rate up.

I think I just need someone to show me how to hit it properly with kicks and punches... I'd ask Valdronius, but I think I'd just get frustrated and punch him instead... I need to find myself an innocent 3rd party...

thats what I do. I'll alternate the weights and the bag and throw some push ups and sit ups in there too.

two of my jobs are physically demanding, and I walk every day, so I figure somethign must be done, althought I mostly picked up weights to kill time.

I wish I had a job that was more physical... sitting at a desk all day is unbelievably boring! I've often thought about doing push-ups and sit-ups at my desk! Except that I'd look like an idiot...

Jew, I'm going to write you a lifting regimen. Since we're already talking on AIM, I'll work out the details there.

I used to use a wall when I was 17, too. Then I stopped being mad at the world.

I'm about to turn 16, so I guess I do fall into that age group (although not that category).

I appreciate it. this looks pretty interesting. I dunno when I'll be able to buy the extra stuff right now, but I'm definitely going to do this.

The biggest thing to get would be the protein. You can survive without the squat rack for a while, just have to grab the weight off the ground, put it behind your head, and do it from there. It will put more stress on your arms, but Squats are the most important lift for a hardgainer, in my opinion.

I have a weight bench, so I try to use that and do 100 situps between 3 to 6 times a week.

Push-ups are good for you if you can't do 50 push-ups. That's about it, though.

Push ups are decent for your triceps, but there's so much better you could be doing for your triceps than push ups.

And sit ups are all right, but if you're not doing weighted ab work, you're really not doing anything else for your abdominal muscles. You won't really get 'toned' abs, the word 'tone' is propaganda used companies trying to sell bullshit weight training products. It doesn't mean anything. If all you do is sit ups, you'll just end up with abdominal muscles that are capable of sustaining your upper body weight. If you want stronger abs, try doing weighted crunches.

I used to do a lot of lifting, but I gave most of it up in favor of bodyweight exercises.

I train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I find that bodyweight training is much better for my sport. It's a different kind of strength that seems to apply to grappling better than actual weightlifting. I'm sure I can't lift as much in the weightroom as I used to, but overall I feel stronger now while on the mat.

I do like using kettlebells, though. They are great for strength and endurance.

Dude, you need to tape yourself performing a kata. That'd be awesome.

I really enjoy watching my friend Josh at his kickboxing and judo practices... it's amazing what some of the guys there can do! I tried to learn some judo and self-defense moves once, it was a sad sight... could have had to do with the level of intoxication both Josh and myself were experiencing! Maybe I'll try again someday...

What benefits does training without weights have, Avian? I'm not disputing it, because I know it works, I'm just curious.

I come from the world of free weights, where everything can be fixed by hard work, proper form, and protein. So, forgive my ignorance.

I think it mainly depends what type of workout you're going for. If you just want to be slim and tight, cardio/aerobics/swimming are good for you. But, if you're looking to bulk up and get muscular, you're gonna want to weight train/run. That's how I would see why you could do one without the other, or you could do both depending on your fitness desire.

Actually it's been proven that for good weight loss you need a combination of weight training and cardio. If you're a pear-shaped fatass and you go running a lot, you're going to end up a smaller pear. Even if you just do deadlifts, squats and bench you'll see a bigger difference than you would ever get from just aerobics.

As far as body weights go, those would be pretty cool to have for training specific stuff like your jabu, jabu jabu jabu.

And finally, as for my thoughts on the gym, well, they have some equipment there that I couldn't fit in my stupid ass broom closet of an apartment, so I find them to be valuable. The atmosphere really isn't competitive at my gym, but there are several other ones in town where the women put on makeup and shit before going to work out, and the guys all strut around like a bunch of cocksure douchebags. I just don't go there. It's more expensive, anyway.
