I'm starting a thread on this because I'm very interested in the topic and would like to see some more opinions on it.
I look at it this way.
A) I really like Al Franken as he was one of the best writers from SNL.
B) He's had a head in politics for years and years.
C) He's running in Minnesota, a state that voted in Jesse "The Body" Ventura, a man who I had no idea was into any politics at all.
D) Arnold Schwarzenegger is also a governor.
D) We've had an actor as president, Reagan.
E) We currently have a total dumbass as president... and he was voted back into a SECOND TERM.
In these conditions, I feel that Franken has a decent chance at winning.

Al Franken was funny in his youth, but now much of his comedy seems to be political namecalling instead of smart, satirical commentary which one can better get from Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert.
Franken himself is a joke to mainstream America considering no one listens to the failing Air America station, or followed him outside of SNL like they did with Belushi, Chase, Farley, Sandler, and Myers. If he really had the charisma, intelligence, and gravitas to win a major election he would have been able to make the station successful by himself.
How I long for his Stuart Smalley days when I actually enjoyed his comedy.

I think his namecalling has mostly been a reaction to the fact that any blowhard can be taken seriously nowadays if they're loud enough. Ann Coulter has made millions by being a frigid, scary cunt and O'Reilly is a "speak first, think later" type of guy. He goes for the easy one-liner and then spends an hour trying to make sense of what he just said. Franken is a less-involved parody of those type of people; less satirical and tongue-in-cheek than Colbert or Stewart, but it's effective.
I'm pretty sure he's running for Senate and not governor though. Either way, it's obvious from the way he writes and speaks that he cares deeply for the state he's from, and he's been involved in Minnesota politics for quite a while.

I would vote for Stuart Smalley if he ran for a political office, not sure if I'd vote for Franken.

Too late, you beat her to it.
Anyway. I would be okay with al franken as governer. I would much prefer Al Frankenstien.
(also, once you get used to Ann Coulter and realize shes just hawking a book she starts being really funny. In the same way that 50 cent is an unintentional parody of gansta rap, the coultergiest is an unintetional parody of genuinely crazy political commentators.)
