This screenshot from the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. was taken by director Masahiro Sakurai and uploaded to the game's official site today. Does it look familiar? That's the island from Lesson 3 of Pilotwings for the Super Nintendo -- in other words, one of those classic locations permanently burned into your memory if you're a fan.
Apparently, it's a stage in Smash. I mean, what else could it be? My guess is that the actual fighting itself will take place at a higher altitude. Either way, cool game for Nintendo to highlight.
The official Super Smash Bros. website has been updated, and a new challenger has appeared -- Toon Link! That brings the total cast so far for the Wii U and 3DS games up to 16 combatants, coming off the recent reveal of Princess Peach.
As I've said many times before, I want Dr. Mario back. They've changed Mario enough that Doc is separate character. And throwing pills at people is awesome. Plus, he could have a really cool Final Smash.
They seem to be announcing characters on the day their games come out, pikmin, luigi, toon link. I am excited to see what pokemon we get on october 12th when X and Y launch.

Hopefully not a Trainer because it's cumbersome having to manage three fighters in a game where everyone else can be comfortable focusing on one.

It'll probably be the return of Mewtwo but with his new transformations, given the emphasis that has been put on them in the marketing of the upcoming Pokemon games.

I could see Mewtwo, but I could also see Zoroark as a replacement for Lucario.

I am also a fan of Dr. Mario, but if they're minimizing the roster for quality concerns, then I doubt he shall reappear. An alternate costume is probably all that may happen.
I am betting Chrom will replace Ike.

Alternatively, you could wind up with Lucina replacing Marth. Though I'll be happy with whoever makes it into the game.

Gotta go fast. Again.
Also Dr. Mario is coming to Project M, for whatever that's worth.

I'm fine with an alternate costume, so long as it skins the fire balls to be pills and gives them the pill sound. The pills are the main thing that makes Dr. Mario awesome.

Nintendo Direct, April 8, 2014
3DS version releases this summer, Wii U version releases this winter.
New characters: Greninja, Charizard, Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, Yoshi
Zero Suit Samus and Sheik are now separate characters with new Down+B moves. No characters transform.
3DS version includes a bonus mode called Smash Run, which opens with a five-minute dungeon crawl where each player grinds for bonus stats and items before the match begins proper.
Online has ranked and unranked variants. "For Glory" is Final Destination, no items. "For Fun" is every stage except Final Destination with items. When playing with friends, online matches are completely unrestricted.
3DS version will allow character customization that can be shared with the Wii U version. No other details at this time.
Stages will have "Final Destination" variants with all gimmicks removed.
Both versions run at 60FPS. Even the 3DS version runs 60FPS in 3D, except with certain Pokemon in play.

I would've been elated if they'd gotten rid of any sort of Final Destination stage just to drive home that this series is supposed to be a casual party fighter.
Also glad to see Elec Man as an Assist Trophy.

Do you guys think that the later release for the Wii U version is going to hurt Nintendo? They're having trouble moving WiiUs as it is, I feel like it's a mistake to give everyone several months to decide they'll just get on 3DS instead.

His Final Smash, I presume. That should make up for the dearth in the franchise, for now. Of course, if he gets dropped from the roster prior to release, Capcom is dead to me.

I was thinking along the same lines. I really like the Smash Bros. games and have a 3DS but not a WiiU. I'm pretty happy than I can pass on the WiiU but still be able to play Smash Bros.

Given how well the Smash series has sold, I'm thinking that Nintendo's positioning of the Wii U release in Winter will incentivize people enough to buy it, possibly as a holiday bundle. I imagine that there's going to be something beyond the Smash Race mode for the Wii U version, to say nothing of the different stages and more than 2 music tracks per stage.
