You know, if you're looking to get into it/a different genre

Top 10 essential Classic Metal albums:
Angel Witch- Angel Witch

Helloween- Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
Iron Maiden- The Number of the Beast
Judas Priest- Painkiller

Top 10 essential Death Metal albums:
Autopsy- Mental Funeral
Cannibal Corpse- The Bleeding
Carcass- Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious
Death- Scream Bloody Gore
Deicide- Deicide
Dismember- Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Morbid Angel- Altars of Madness
Obituary- Slowly We Rot

Repulsion- Horrified

Top 10 essential Black Metal albums:
Tormentor- Anno Domini
Mayhem- De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Dissection- Storm of the Light's Bane
Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Northern Sky*
Celtic Frost- To Mega Therion
Burzum- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Beherit- Drawing Down The Moon
Bathory- Under The Sign of The Black Mark

*I personally prefer Hell Awaits (and South of Heaven etc.) but Reign In Blood is so damn ubiquitous in metal culture that you kind of need to hear it first. I also prefer Transilvanian Hunger to Blaze, but you can only really appreciate it if you've heard all three classic Darkthrone black metal albums and watch the process it took to reach such a masterwork of minimalism, but I don't think too many will disagree on Blaze being a great place to start.

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.

The classic list is definitely perfect. I don't know many of the other bands, unfortunately.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

JRA, I'm looking to get into Avenged Sevenfold. Could you give me your top 20 songs by them? Thanks in advance.

Almost absolutely perfect. The only changes I would make would be to black metal, as quite a few of those could/should be swapped for;

Dawn -Slaughtersun,
Drudkh -The Swan Road
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
Velvet Cacoon - Genevieve
Hate Forest - Purity (This and Dawn would be the two most important)
and Wolves In The Throne Room - Black Cascade

I fucking LOVE black metal though. That said, Hate Forest and Dawn HAVE to be on that list.

Sorry to turn this into a "metal fa" thread, but...

What, exactly, is the difference between death metal and black metal? I had always kind of lumped them into the single category of "stuff that scares me and I don't wanna listen" Laughing .

Also, how do you tell if something is 'thrash?' I would have put Metallica under the classic banner, myself (but I know next to nothing about metal classification other than "I like it/I don't.")

I adore that classic metal list though. Its perfect, and I LOVE that Manowar is on there.

Death Metal is typically tuned down, has growling, gutteral vocals, is fairly to extremely technical playing-wise, is lyrically focused on various aspects of death/gore and usually has as much focus placed on production values as any contemporary rock or pop band.

Black metal is usually tuned no lower than D standard, has much higher, grainy and grittier screamed vocals, is often very simple in terms of technicality and has a fairly established or even cliche` paradigm of melodic development and drumming (theres ALWAYS blast beats). Lyrics vary from occult themes to stylized conceptual writing of shit like winter, battles, spirituality, forests/nature druid/shamanism. Typically there is little or no production. Put a mic infront of your shit and hit record, then put it on a cd.

Compare and contrast with two classic examples, but know that the rabbit hole goes MUCH deeper.

This album annoys me. Too many goofy acoustic moments.

I adore that classic metal list though. Its perfect, and I LOVE that Manowar is on there.

Death Metal bands typically look grungy and sometimes vaguely paramilitary in a lazy drunken kind of way, but don't really spend any money on stage shows beyond bitching guitars and lights, the rest of the energy and time goes in to dangerous (but awesome) ammounts of headbanging.

They do the pig grunt/cookie monster vocals, and favor topics and themes like death, murder, anything violent, and pushing the existing envelope for coming up with the most insanely ludicrous and over the top offensive song titles/lyrics/album covers.

Good Death Metal bands are highly technical and complex musically speaking, while still remaining understandable to the human ear, and even in some cases, still crunchy / catchy / cool sounding. Bad Death Metal sounds like a diarrhea in a blender.

Black Metal bands look like KISS, and sound like what old people who've never heard KISS before and spout the Kids In Service (to?) Satan story believe KISS probably sounds like. Some Black Metal Bands have Keyboardists.

I don't really like Black Metal besides some Dimmu Borgir and a little bit of Dark Funeral, so someone else will have to take it from here. Try to touch upon Cradle of Filth and the argument about them being Black Metal, or actually Fruity Goth Vampire Metal, that's always a fun one.

(EDIT) Just realized that JRA and Epic Beard Dude beat me to the point and did so in a less stupid way than I did, oops! Embarrassed

Awesome list. Those are pretty essential and the only albums I'm missing are Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2, Beneath the Remains, In The Nightside Eclipse, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (I do have Burzum/Aske though), Storm of the Light's Bane and Ano Domini.

Anno Domini is technically a demo. It might have been released as a CD a while back, but you will have to go to blogspot to obtain it.

Thank you for your kind words though.

I tend to play hard techno on vinyl from Detroit and Sweden or videogame soundtracks. My top multiplayer games are Smash Brothers series and Super Mario Strikers.

For Super Mario Strikers I have played to:
Kizakura - Drago blu
Kizakura - Tigre bianca
Kizakura - Tartaruga nera
Shinji Hosoe - Uccello rosso

dude... at empire, with hatebreed? i'm thinking of going to that... i think tix are still available. sweatiest lineup ever Laughing

also i know the subgenres in the OP are kind of the "big ones" of metal, but there are plenty of others that deserve some mentions. progressive, stoner/doom/sludge, grind (although i do see repulsion already!), metalcore (and before you start bitching, keep in mind earlier pioneers of the subgenre like botch and converge and integrity!), post-metal, so on.

Reading over a lot of my old posts and came across this one.

I've of course continued to explore metal and found a lot of fucking awesome albums, many of which I want to add, but I can't really think of what to take out. Perhaps take out Cannibal Corpse- The Bleeding and replace it with Incantation- Onward to Golgotha

Master's Hammer- Ritual is quintessential black metal. I really hate to take out Tormentor-Anno Domini, but one thing the former has is its actually purchasable.
