Few people seem to know what emo is here, so I'm curious.

After watching the images on wikipedia, I can say I didn't see any here Very Happy

I don't know much abbreviation. I mixed FTW with WTF, so I thought the F meant fuck.

And the emoticons stopped working on my computer for a while. Rolling eyes was stuck and looked tired.

I'm not sure. All I've ever gotten from people when I ask them is "emo is fucking gay." Which tells jack shit. I've never actually met a self styled emo person, so what an emo might be is lost. But the small bits of stereotypes I've collected over the years I've made some estimations.

1. Emo is a nebulous term used to describe someone who you do not like who may possess any number of qualities associated with emo. Basically, emo is bad, certain things have an amount of emo, and only by learning and conforming to your given group can you actually determine what is and isnt emo and how to not be emo. Like the popular use of the term "westerner" by nazi germany and japan to modern middle east and china; meant to imply some degree of spiritual corruption, elitist morality and waste, and a sniviling cowardice as opposed to the simple, noble, proletariate passion and wisdom. Not to compare emo haters to nazis or terrorists.

2. An emo person is an individual obsessed with their own sadness and self percieved loneliness, given to self treatment by emotional expression and group indentification. Maybe a lack of parental affection? In any case this is about as grating as any other mono-emotional individual with the need to conform (especially in american culture).

Just guesses here right now.

FTW = Fuck the World and For the Win

The "Fuck the World" version came from ECW. Taz was struggling to win the World Championship Title from Shane Douglas who was just harassing him but never faced him in the ring, so he created his own title which had an orange and black FTW on it and claim himself to be the World Champion.

We get lots of emos over here in old London town...

They typically dye their hair black, listen to a lot of self-pitying, major label, music such as Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, etc. They're suburban, white, middle-class teenagers who think they've got it rough and they "non-conform" just like all their other friends...

It's pretty much the worst music/fashion trend going, it's obnoxiously self-centred and crass.

A friend of mine always said an emo was a "colorful goth". I think that's the best analogy.

That Wiki entry is pretty much right on. Emo kids want to be doted on, and if they don't get the attention they want, they flatter themselves into thinking they're depressed.

I say they 'flatter themselves', because if you look at a lot of emo kids, they live with a good family, in a good neighborhood, probably have people in their lives that care about them, but they still like to think they're depressed, because they think they're worth more than they really are.

I'm probably (definitely) talking out of my ass, lord knows I'm a psychology major, and know all about how the human mind works.

(whether he did or not is up for argument, an argument I'm not even going to talk about, I have a brother who likes to fight about it enough as it is)

I'm well aware of what clinical depression is, but these kids? Pah, I'd be surprised if any of them were actually depressed. Being depressed doesn't make you grow your hair like an anime character, listen to My Chemical Romance and write in shitty little Geocities webpages that have black backgrounds and hot pink fonts, crammed full of awful poetry about "pain".

That's not depression, that's self obsession.
