I don't know what they teach you in MA, but here in PEI we don't commonly use the term retarded without risking to offend someone (unless it's used for a medical reason which it's not in this case) If you want to talk about misusing the word, using retarded commonly is definitely a misuse, since it occurs in only 1-3% of the population. I wouldn't call that common.

I would venture to say that I would not want to leave the fate of an unborn child I had a hand in making to the government. Nor would I trust an HMO.
Course, I would recommend an abortion for some kid with flippers or a missing face or a lopsided brain. But many developmental disabilities appear too late in life for that.
The community college I attend serves a nearby development center. Maybe were lucky here but they all seem fairly nice. Some get jobs, some don't. Many of them have friends and relationships and all that kind of stuff. And there's this reaction like they drain our country of every last resource and dilute our precious precious gene pool. Its not like every month they ransack houses for supplies and rape the women to produce more of their brood. Get over it.

Most people who have Downs Syndrome do have mild to moderate mental retardation. But, a small number do fall within the normal range in cognitive ability. What is your argument here?
