So I'm applying for careers in my field right now and one of the places I applied to was BP. As I was going through the application process for Environmental Air Adviser, they had a requirement about having three years (minimum) of experience with Air quality and compliance. I took it as addition to college experience, since I've taken several courses in my college career involving Air emissions.

My question is this, would a place like British Petroleum consider college experience as a part of the three years, or would they expect only people with prior work in the field?

As a side note, while it is highly unlikely, they replied with an E-mail explaining that by me saying yes (which I did) they are considering my resume.

I would assume work in the field only, but you should say yes anyways and claim ignorance if it that turns out to be how it is. Worth a shot.

School does not count as work experience, only actually working does.

Yeah, I'm almost 100% certain that classes don't count as experience.

Well the thing is the question had the following experience and requirements. The only one that I had in question was the 3 years. But at the same time, I took a course involving resumes and telling me to put my courses where I would put my work experience. Anyways here are the requirements:

Essential Education
College Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, or Sciences

Essential experience and job requirements
- Must be legally authorized to work full time in the US for anyone other than your current employer
- Must not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., TN, H1B status)
- Knowledge of oil and gas regulatory requirements
- 3 years (minimum) experience in environmental air permitting & compliance background
- Strong communication skills, ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to read, understand and interpret environmental regulations
- Ability to manage short and long-term aspects of the project
- Ability to effectively manage available resources and prioritize work on a continual basis
- Experience demonstrating an ability to build productive and credible relationships, particularly within BU teams and with regulatory agencies

Two of the classes I took I thought I could have done a hell of a better job then the teacher, what with the "group quizzes" and "Open Notebook Final"

It doesn't count. But apply anyways. They're more "guidelines" than "rules".

Well your resume would clearly show you don't have 3 years experience, so if you get an interview then I wouldn't worry about it to much.

In your resume highlight the fact that you studied for several years, and then just apply. Don't lie though. Just highlight the other qualifications you meet.

In a resume you should write some of your achievements. Still you need experience to get a job. Need a job to get one.

I've been there. Need experience to get the job, but I need the job to get experience. I kept applying resumes until I got a job from a company that didn't care about experience. It took months.
