What happened to toys that were more realistic and less over the top? When we were kids you had Army Men, Hot Wheels, (That were real car models and not monsters with wheels attached.) Transformers that changed into real vehicals! Toys guns modeled after real ones. GI Joe's that had vehicals that were based off real military ones.

Walk down the toy store isles now, and all you see are extremely over-the-top or "futuristic looking" Cars, planes, weapons, and other toys. What happened?

THEN:

NOW:

Show me any car or vehical toy from the 80's, and I could tell you the make and model. Now, they are all made up from scratch and look insanely dumb.

Agree? Disagree?

Hmmm. Depends what you mean. I like some of Joe's new futuristic crap, but I do prefer the older TransFormers.

Megtron transformed into a Walther P38. A REAL weapon. And, I don't know if it was intended or not, but the P38 was developed in Germany durring WWII for use as the service pistol of the Wehrmacht. (Nazi ArmY)

The Japanese Zapper was a revolver hand gun, but when released in North America was changed to look like an laser gun that matched the look of the NES.

There is nothing wrong with SCI-FI toys. I loved Star Wars and Star Trek. My point is not to dis them, my point is that, they are all that are availible today to kids! Unless you go out and buy a Revell Model Kit, you are not going to find much in the way of Toys based on real world vehicals and weapons.

Let us not forget that the gray NES Zapper was discontinued because some idiot somewhere decided it was TOO REALISTIC and thus Nintendo started making the reddish orange ones.

to be honest, I had no idea about the gook zapper, and I thougth megatron turned into a laser gun. I think there's actually a law now that says toy guns over a certain size have to be obviously lasers and shit, because of cops shooting kids and stuff like that.

Action figures are scultped better these days though. My local comic book store has a used Lex Luthor figure for sale from the early 90s that looks like absolute shit. Figures generally tend to be articulated better too, unless they're McFarlane Toys, which only have like three posing positions.

Pfff. Toy guns. Buy AirSoft guns. Those look real.

Also, I always wondered what happened to the gray zapper. Who's the fuckstick who thought that it looked too real?

I don't play with my toys, I put them all on display, so the macfarlane figures are great for me. I'm a big fan of his anime figures and the movie maniacs. there's nothign funier than seeing armitage III on the same shelf as robocop. I also totally dug his soul calibur II minis, even though he used the retarded easter buny outfit for astaroth instead of his mr. potato head one.

because I buy figures for display purposes, I try to avoid most of the marvel legends like the plauge, because usually they have obviously visible points of articulation, look jerkey, and usually don't stand on their own. my only exceptions are guys like Like Cage, silver iron man, and blackheart (coincidentally all from the same set,) because finding a figure of them that isn't a custom is neigh impossible.

I do enjoy the MacFarlane figures immensely. Arnold with the coffin from T3 is one of my favorite figures ever. And Ozzy.

I would give one of my kidneys if he made a figure of Iced Earth's "The Stormrider."

Damn, I saw a Halo figure with the exact same coloring as the Spartan that I use in Halo 2, but sadly I was short on cash. Crying

I want to find the three original halo toys, that didn't look goofy and retarded.

they had a sick looking chief, a glowing cortana, and a warthog.

I've got Eli Manning getting ready to pass the ball on the run to Samoa Joe sitting on my shelf right now. Guaranteed that Eli overthrows it and Optimus Prime picks it off unexpectedly in the backfield while trying to cover New Jack.

Don't ask why I have a sports/wrestling vs robots diorama set up on my shelf, because I can't explain it, either. But I'll tell you know that CM Punk will make one HELL of a runningback next month.

Someone needs to release a heat-activated Ric Flair doll. Run him under cool water and his face becomes bloodied and his hair changes from white to red. Woooo!

I used to love the old WWF figures. I had a ton of them, and that badass ring. Man, I used to spend hours playing with those. I used to do Royal Rumbles with them and my XMen figures.

Memories...

I sold those figures at a garage sale over ten years ago. I tried to sell some of the old WWF magazine issues at that garage sale too. Only the ones with Elizabeth on the cover were bought by one middle-aged man. Eh, who can blame him?

McFarlane toys look great, but you can't do much with them.

And my final thought: The original Casey Jones action figure is better than the new one.
