Meh. Maybe you're right. Confused

But when it comes to Sony, you have the cream of the crap, not the crop. At least until they have a price drop and some software updates.

I'm not sure I agree that Nintendo's in a race of their own, but either way: what's wrong with that? You're saying they shouldn't make consoles because they don't make the kind of consoles you like? A whole lotta people dig the Wii.

Just because Nintendo's console is different doesn't mean it can't still be the industry leader. Look at the DS. Many people said the DS would fail, but it's completely kicking the shit out of the PSP in terms of sales, popularity, and street cred.

And the Wii does support traditional games. It's not just all gimmicky Wiimote stuff.

it's not a matter of supporting traditional gaming, its a matter of badly implimenting gimmiky gaming.

fuck man, look at marvel ultimate alliance. who thought it would be a good idea to force ou to use a wiimote for a game like that?

I think Nintendo should should change the Wii's classification from Video Game console, to "Family Entertainment System". The FES, if you will.

It's just that the Nintendo I loved is now dead. When I think of great Nintendo, I think of Final Fantasy I-VI, Romance of The Three Kindoms I-IV, Tecmo Bowl, Dragon Quest series, The N64 Aki Wrestling games, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, and the like.

I don't think of waving a remote around on a machine with graphics from 5 years ago, trying to throw a ball or swinging a sword. I think its a great gimmick, I really do. But, it is not a hardcore gamer's system. When you think hardcore gaming systems, you think SEGA genesis and Dreamcast, Neo Geo AES, PS1+2, Xbox, SNES, NES, and maybe the TG+16. You think of the long hours spent, the all nighters, the feeling of beating a game after many weeks of playing. I just don't see the Wii having those kinds of games. Zelda may prove me wrong, but personally, I think I would much rather play it on a Gamecube with a more "Traditional" controller.

You do realize that the NES was known as the Famicom in Japan, right? A contraction of FAMILY and COMPUTER. And if anything, the Wii *is* for hardcore gamers, while the PS3 and 360 are for casual gamers who just want to play Madden, World War 2 sims, and shallow violence-based games like GTA, Dead Rising, and God of War.

have you PLAYED dead rising? the violence isn't even a big factor. it's more comic book, salpstick violence than anything. the big appeal to dead rising is somethign everyone should try t oconcentrate on. it's simple, easy, and fun.

Yeah, I have played Dead Rising. It's really fun for the first two weeks, but then it gets old. And aside from one or two of the boss battles, it's really easy. And an easy game where you shove parking cones over zombies' heads, jump kick them, and then cut then done with Japanese swords would definitely fall into the category of "mindless violence". The mindlessness of Dead Rising doesn't make it a bad game by any means, but it is what it is. It's a very fun game and it's brilliant concept, but the game was scientifically designed for casual gamers; you can ignore almost all of the missions and just hack zombies apart if you so desire.

ignoring everyhting except zombie violence won't net you any of the good endings, most of hte unlockables, or any of the achievements.

teh game was designed more towards replayability. the game is short, but there's no way to do everythign in one play through. I feel that there was enough goign on with escorting survivors, taking pictures, and things like that to break up the mindless zombie killing too.

you want mindless violence? mortal kombat is mindless violence. the game sucks, the game knows it sucks, the game sells on fatalities.

I'm more perterbed taht you called the game violence based, that's all.

I also don't understand how you can complain abotu shallow games when so far the wii has given us excite truck and wii bowling. not exactly deep, they are.

wii's big hit is zelda, which is nothing we haven't seen before. furthermore, it's jsut a gamecube port.

the most entertaining factors about the wii are check ign the weather and playing games that you could get for free on an emulator.

The Wii should be getting more games soon, and just because they are simple doesn't mean they aren't fun. This line of thought also assumes that the Wii will not lend itself to "deep" games.

I'm gonna wait on the Wii, but it deserves a chance.

all anyone seems to say to defend the wii is "eventually something worth buying will come out!"

and I'm not talking about teh games having to be deep. I'm talkign about the games being more than hardware demonstations. tennis isn't even a real game. all you do is swing the controller and let the game handle the rest. your guy puts himself in the right position, and uses the right swing for the position he's in.

table tennis on the 360 wasn't deep, but it was an actual game.

excite truck? ooh cool, I can steer by moving my hands! now impliment this into a game that isn't five mintues long and we might have a moneymaker, or at least don't charge me fifty bucks for it. excite truck feels liek a game I should buy for ten bucks, or get on a free demo disc.

burnout revenge wasn't deep, but it was more than a minigame.

Wii Sports is a free game that came with the console. It was originally a hardware demo for E3. Also, have you read the upcoming launches for the Wii? Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is coming, amongst others. And if you say that Metroid Prime isn't a "deep" game, then you're wrong. The 360's launch lineup kind of sucked. Hell, I think most launch lineups suck because the publishers aren't sure what the hell the console will do yet. I heard the exact same arguments about the DS, and we all know how that turned out. Now, PSP fans' only argument is "Well, the PSP has better graphics", and that's because it came out 2 years later, and costs more. Knyte, damn you for making me doubt the Wii.

I still plan to get a 360, though. Gotta branch out.

I'm seriously debating getting a 360 since I'm not having much luck finding a Wii right now. Having been out the longest, the 360 has the advantage of having a more plentiful supply of fantastic games out for it: Condemened, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Elder Scrolls IV, Viva Pinata.

Trust me, the Wii is worth the cash.

Right now, the lineup is very similar to what the DS was dealing with when it launched -- you get a couple of "flagship" titles (Zelda, for one) and a bunch of exploratory games that test out different ideas using the hardware. If nothing else, I think it's GOOD we're seeing this, because it means developers are actually trying to get creative and see what works and what doesn't.

Right now, games that I recommend:

Zelda (obviously)

Madden (I know it's a crime against humanity to recommend this, but EA did a fantastic job with the controls AND the game has all of the season/franchise features that are lacking in the "next-gen" releases). The graphics are slightly above Xbox quality, but I haven't cared a bit. It's a LOT of fun.

Excitetruck

It's more than a "tech demo". There are multiple tracks, tricks can actually take some practice to pull off, the game lets you use mp3's stored on a SD card to provide a custom soundtrack (the built-in one is awful), and it's just fun to play. It's not going to change the world, but it's a nice pick up and play game and the fact that you hold the remote like the old NES gamepad makes me all fuzzy and nostalgic.

Elebits

This one almost succumbs to the "tech demo" trap described above, but it's frenetic enough to shirk it off. You basically ransack environments looking to zap these little "electricity demons". And, with wiiConnect24 you can upload custom levels to your friends.

Rayman Raving Rabbids

Here's the obligatory mini-games game. But it's got a quirky sense of humor that helps you gloss over the fact that you'll probably burn through this game the fastest of your new collection. I got it for Christmas, so it was free, but I love playing it.

I've also heard great things about the Wii "Trauma Center", but I haven't played that particular version yet.

Also, the VC is shaping up nicely, though it's still early on in its lifespan. If you've never played "Gunstar Heroes", it's there for you, and they just got "Castlevania IV" on Christmas (sorry.. I'm a CV dork). With the sheer backlog of stuff they can shovel out across all the previous Nintendo platforms, the Genesis, and the TG-16, there's a LOT of potential.

As far as the 360 goes, I got one a few months after launch and haven't looked back. Between its ever-expanding game lineup and the sheer awesomeness of networking it with my MCE box to stream TV shows I grab with my PC's capture card to my television, it's provided a LOT of fun.

I'd recommend

Gears of Fucking War (!!)
Viva Pinata
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Tomb Raider: Legend (it's fun)
Fight Night Round 3
Sneak King (the $3.99 Burger King stealth game)
Oblivion, F.E.A.R., and Prey if you don't have a PC that can do them justice

Plus a few of the Xbox Live Arcade games are highly worth it

Geometry Wars
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (!!!)
DOOM and Street Fighter (though I definitely play the other two more)
Castle Crashers is coming, as is, apparently, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Very Happy Very Happy

As a side note, I used some disposable (casino winnings) cash to pick up the HD-DVD drive (I want blu-ray to keel over and die) and it's performed flawlessly, loading discs MUCH more quickly than Toshiba's first-gen standalone HD-DVD player does.

Is Noob Saibot available in the XBox version of UMK3? He was available on special WaveNet arcade machines using the following code:

Play As Noob Saibot: Play against a human opponent. Select Kano then hold Back+LP+LK+HP+BL until the match begins

I got that as my second game after Zelda and I have to say the game is a really rewarding experience. A friend of mine who played the DS version watched me play this one and felt they definately made some improvements to the interface, as well as adding a few more missions and apparently there's a second ending.

once again, "eventually somethign good will come out!"

telling me wii sports was only a hardware demo only strengthens my point. also, what about excite truck?

360 games worth buying a launch:
tony hawk's american wasteland
burnout revenge
dat madden
perfect dark zero (wah wah wah shut up it's still a fun game)
DOA 4
bomberman: act zero (JUST KIDDING!)

there were plenty that I can't remember off the top of my head, and yes, I know I listed some ports because of this.

wii games worth buying on launch:
zelda

I won't lie about the PSP, it's a shittily designed system, but it's still got megaman powered up, megaman X, street fighter alpha 3 max, darkstalkers chronicles, tekken: dark resurection, syphon filter, splinter cell, me and my katamari, liberty city stories, metal gear acid, and a good sonic game. I'll take that over super mario 64, cooking mama, wario minigames, and crappy double screen, might as well be game boy advance sonic any day of the week.

fine, it's a tech demo with custom soundtracks.

EDIT: if SOTN comes to X box arcade i'm selling my Wii.

If Starrcade '97 comes to X-Box Arcade, that'll seal the deal and force me to buy a 360.

I actually wasn't be sarcastic. While I doubt X-Box Arcade will start offering old wrassling PPVs, Starrcade '97 is definitely one of the all-time greats.
