Meh, there have always been explanations, they just came from a fantasy world. That doesn't mean that a game where you can teat people's heads from their bodies isn't dark and gritty.

The plot of mortal kombat 3 focused on mass genocide. There were kill crews that were going around slaughtering people. One of the characters was horribly disfigured by one of these crews and lived his life for vengeance.

Gritty Mortal Kombat Fan Film Becomes Official Series
Remember that mysterious live action Mortal Kombat trailer that appeared on YouTube one day last June? The one that featured well-known actors like Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, that we later found out was a viral marketing pitch to get interest from Warner Bros.?
Well, the stunt seems to have worked, as WB announced Monday that director Kevin Tancharoen is hard at work on an official digital series exploring the back-stories of the Mortal Kombatants.
No word on a cast yet, but given that shooting begins next month, we should be getting word soon. The series will debut this spring via online digital retailers.
If it's anything at all like that reboot, I am going to be so pissed.

eh, i thought the reboot trailer was cool. it shouldnt be thrown into the MK canon, maybe it should be MK:Gaiden or something. i mean, if we are ok w/marvel and dc having a million alternate universes, i dont see why MK cant have that as well.

I'm mixed on this, I'm seeing it as a "re-imagining" or I'm trying to at least.
Fuck it, I'd watch it when If came out to see if it was any good, but I won't be holding my breath.

I didn't read anything about it being forced into canon. I think it will be a separate thing.

There was a Mortal Kombat cartoon, and it wasn't made canon, so we really have no reason to assume this will be.
As you can see, it's probably best to keep these things as separated as possible

Some new news has surfaced.
Yes, it will be adapted into a web series. It's scheduled to be a 10 part mini series and is set up for a story arc for the franchise's new film that has a pending release date of "2013", so says iMDB.
I'm guessing WB has changed their minds about greenlighting this? Or maybe will wait to see what the response is to the series? I dunno. Still a mystery.

The world will end before this series comes out! D:
Seriously though, I'll watch it. I'm a huge fan of MK, and I kinda enjoy watching crappy movies, so I think I'm gonna be ok either way

I agree. I'd watch it. It could either be really cool, or extremely retarded. I'd be worth the watch regardless.
So far that's just "Two guys punch each other: the movie"
However, if that was Kano and Jax and they get half their face and both arms blown off (respectively ), it goes back to awesome

What, no embeds? [NES:c44ffdfa78]LAME[/NES:c44ffdfa78]
EDIT: Ok, just watched it. Nothing really spoilerrifc, but I wanted to try out the new tag
[SPOILER:c44ffdfa78]There's a lot of potential in it, sure (They don't seem to have any qualms about killing people, and the unexplained hi-tech stuff fits well), but there's still not enough to make or break this show. The "damsel in distress" feels like lazy writing for me, specially considering it's Sonya Frikkin Blade we're talking about.
I like the few nods they make to people who played the games, but I guess that's mandatory for any ssort of "Video Game to X" product.[/SPOILER:c44ffdfa78]
Definitely going to keep watching these.

Yeah. I'm sure that this is just a side story for what is really going to take place later in the series. I am kind of surprised that it is only 12 minues long. I definitely expected it to be longer. New episodes weekly however.

It was alright, but if you just changed their names, this could be any cop/shooter movie. I can't wait for more characters to show up, because I really liked their designs for Reptile and Baraka.
Also, I didn't really like how Kano looked. He should've been more scruffy and less pretty boy-ish. Actually, that actor looked like he'd make a great Mavado.
