This contest is over, here are the top 3 finishers.
Champ: LiteYear - 91 Points
Runner up: Valdronius - 90 Points
Third: Ghandi - 76 points
Results for all contestants
No need to read the following, but I'll leave it there.
Good news, everyone! It's time for another round of SNES challenges to put your skills to the test. Since Douche is a little busy this time around, Fernin and I will be handling all the work, though Douche and Syd are still involved with creating and deciding challenges.
This contest will follow the same format as the previous ones, so those of you who've participated before will know the deal. If you're not familiar, the contest will consist of 10 challenges of varying style for 10 different games over the course of 10 weeks. Each week, a new challenge will be posted in a new thread, with a description and game file and any necessary save files provided for you. Before the deadline at the end of each week, you'll submit the movie file to either myself or Fernin for it to count. Further details will be provided when the competition begins.
Emulator: SNES9x v1.52
Instructions as what to do for each round:
Download the rom and save file(s) provided in the first post of the new round thread. Place the save file(s) in the Saves folder. When the rom is loaded, hitting F1 will load the first state, F2 second, etc.
After you've practiced enough and think you're ready to record a run, load the save state, Select File -> Movie Record... (name a file) and select OK. Then do your thing, and when you're done, select File -> Movie stop. An smv file will be created in the Movies folder.
When you are completely satisfied with your run, attach the smv file(s) and send them to either
SNES2010@gmail.com (me) or
Fernin320@gmail.com (Fernin)
When naming the smv file, include your name so that either myself or Fernin will be able to identify you from the sign-up list. Also include the game name.
Example: Game = Blah. Contestant = JoeSchmo
The file would be named JoeSchmo_Blah.smv
Make the subject of the mail: "SNES challenge 2010: Round x" or something along those lines. It might also be helpful to include your name, even though it should already be on the smv files.
Rules:
No cheating will be tolerated at all. This means no save states, slowdown, turbo, etc. Hopefully we won't have any problems with this.
And of course, submit your entry on time.

I don't know how busy I'll be in March, but at worst I'll just send some crappy runs. Count me in.

*sits in cheering section, popcorn and beer in hand*
Just do me a favor...PLEASE tell me each challenge will have the vids (or at least the top 3 or whatever) uploaded to the YouTube account asap--none of this waiting until the whole competition is over until we can watch them? Makes it SO much more fun for us spectators. Pleeeeeease?

Speaking as someone who is still waiting to see NES Challenge '09 videos 4-10 posted (hell, even to find out how each person placed in each round), as well as one of the hosts of this Challenge... I fully support that idea.
We already know from experience that people are going to drop out before the end, whether or not the results of each challenge are kept secret from them, so I'm all for putting up the results as we get them.

I'll join in for this.
What recording software is it best to use. All software i use saves a 5 minute video as like 5 gig which isn't really desirable.
EDIT: Even what compression software or file format to use?

The emulator has a built-in recording feature.

I'd join, but my current computer is far too slow for an emulator. I'll participate off to the side, using the real deal if I own any of the games. Hopefully I'll have a new computer by next years challenge.

Unless you have a computer from the 90's I can't even imagine how your computer is to slow for an emulator. All you need is 32MB of ram and atleast windows 95. I'm quite intrigued to know your system specs.

It's an XP, I believe. I say its slow due to all the junk my cousins download to it (A family computer), plus all the viruses and the like they've acquired over the years. I've yet to try an emulator on it, but judging from the speed of IE and Firefox, I'd guess an emulator would probably run at a slow crawl. I stick with using my PS3 for my internet browser needs.
I might just see how an emulator runs on it later tonight, but I remain doubtful it will work properly.

I know that. I had a GBA emulator on my last computer, but my dad has it now for some reason.
I was using the speed of the browsers to judge the overall speed of the computer. I'm assuming the SNES emulator is much harder for the computer to run. Sorry if the wording is off, my mind is shooting blanks today when it comes to words. But I think you get the gist of what I'm saying.
