Fuck this bullshit.

Pluto will always be a planet,
The Pledge of Allegiance will always contain the words "under God",
and sitting cross-legged will always be Indian-style.

Agreed. Well, for the most part. "Under God" wasn't added till the fifties -- long after the pledge had already been around. I'm not saying it doesn't have staying power, but it hasn't always been like that. As opposed to Pluto, which has been considered a planet ever since it was discovered.

Right now there's only a holding page, but I just registered www.plutoisaplanetdammit.com

You don't fuck with Pluto.

By the way, if any board members have any ideas about what to put on PIAPD, feel free to chime in. Right now I'm thinking of just a single page with pluto on it and some catchy pissed-off one-liner.

I know about the Pledge. But our generation learned it with "under God" and it's hard for me to imagine it or accept it any other way. I was pretty pissed when they started doing all that wacky crap to our currency too. I'm cantankerous like that.

You could put up on an online petition. I know those generally don't help, and I'm sure it would be especially uninteresting to a group of self-important scientists, but it would still be cool to see how much support you can garner for the cause.

Maybe you could discuss some of the other ways that Pluto has been screwed in the past... like sharing its name with an annoying Disney character and a terrible Eddie Murphy movie.

I agree with their decision. Pluto's orbit is not in the same plane as the other eight planets, and intersects Neptune's. It's just another planetoid within the Kuiper Belt.

The problem is that if we kept Pluto as a planet, we would have to include dozens of others within the Kuiper Belt as well as the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Would you rather have 8, 12, or possibly something like 24 or 100? I'll take 8.

Having it as only eight keeps the solar system special by not letting in almost everything that orbits the sun. A planet must have a spherical shape and a uniform orbit within the same plane as the other planets, not be leftover space debris from the formation of the solar system like asteroids and Kuiper Belt Objects.

Pluto is more than just an asteroid though. For instance, it has 3 moons. And one of those moons is named Charon. How badass is that?

I didn't mean to imply that Pluto is an asteroid. At best it's a planetoid. Although, I admit, it sure seems odd for something that isn't a planet to have some moons. I still prefer the eight planet system though.

I like nine, because I can remember them with a mnemonic device:

Mark's very erotic mother just served us nice pussy

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

How about: Mark's very erotic mother just served us nookie?

Sorry, that's all I got.

pluto was always my favorite planet growing up. it was the underdog of the planets, the little guy you could root for in our solar system. also it had the same name as mickey mouse's dog, which is obviously cooler than any other planets name. and now some bigshot assholes come swinging thru and relegate my favorite planet to asteroid status, well i'm still pulling for planet pluto!...i think the same people that took away plutos planet title are the same ones who are remaking (or should i say destroying) transformers as a movie. bumblebee as a camaro is retarded, it doesnt even make sense...fucking bastards

I'm surprised I've never seen that mnemonic device before, funny.

I've heard that the reason Bumblebee isn't a bug is because VW denied them the rights because they don't like being associated with violence/war. Understandable, considering their history as a company formed at Hitler's prodding, but, I agree, it really sucks. Bumblebee as a sports car simply does not seem right. Neither does not having Soundwave or Shockwave in the movie. Ah well, at least Starscream is still in it. I think I'll wait until it comes out on video to see it to delay my lamenting at how it screws with my childhood nostalgia.

Changing the status of Pluto at this point in time is as ridiculous as that simplified english crap people have been trying to get over. Is anyone genuinely bothered by refering to Pluto as a planet? I doubt it. Will it really screw a lot of people up, and piss a lot more off? Most likely.

I can imagine a scenario where firstborn child comes home from just learning about the planets in first grade. Since I don't have any kids yet and since this is a hypothetical situation, let's assume my firstborn is a girl. We'll call her Anna. Anna Lexia. It might go down something like this:

Anna: Daddy, guess what?
Me: What?
Anna: We learned about the solar system in school today. I can name all eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune!
Me: But there are nine planets!
Anna: Nu-uh. Teacher said there are only eight. She also said there are some complete dummies who insist there is a ninth planet called Pluto.
Me: But there is!
Anna: Nu-uh, teacher said so!
Me: Yeah, well your teacher is a fucking cunt.
Anna: I'm telling mommy you swore!
Me: Like hell you are! GET OVER HERE!

At that point, I would probably go into a blind rage and beat Anna with her science book until she passed out. However, the world could be spared this violence. If astronomers reneg on their decision, my unborn daughter won't have to suffer a horrible beating. Keep Pluto a planet. Do it for Anna.

I don't know. Remia sounds like it would be a male pornstar's last name. I don't want Anna hanging out with the son of a pornstar.

If at least one person gets it, it will all have been worth it.

Actually, just as you posted that, I was going to edit the spelling to "Reamia". Incidentally, does it matter if she hangs out with a porn star's son if she's been beaten to death? I mean, it might. I just wasn't sure where you drew the line, y'know.

EDIT: Oh, nevermind, she just passed out.

There are asteroids in our solar system bigger than Pluto, why aren't those planets? The only reason people are crying about Pluto being demoted to a dwarf planet is because it has a cute name.

I wouldn't attack your child Syd. Cuz if TV has taught me anything, it's that when you go into a blind rage, your children will run away from you. Then you'll chase them. And then the phone will trip you with its cord and kill you.

My experience today:
*Cell Phone Rings*
Me: 'Ello?
Caller: Tebor, Pluto's no longer a planet!
Me: What?
Caller: They kicked Pluto out!
Me: .... Why are you calling me?
Caller: Isn't that fucked up?
Me: I thought they threw it out years ago.
Caller: Dude! Pluto's... no... longer... a... planet...

The Pluto debate has been one I've been living with for a few years now. I supported keeping it a planet despite the wrong rotation cycle and size, because it symbolizes the dumbness of human intelligence. I also support not adding every friggin' rock we find into our solar system. I don't care about having a scientific system of what should and shouldn't be added to our solar system. I vote we stop with the classics until we discover either Planet X, the invisible planet Chaos, or Planet Vader.

That said, I think the science community just wants attention. When was the last time anyone talked about science not dealing with terrorism on MSNBC?
