Two Florida students were found dead inside a large, deflated helium balloon that they apparently pulled down to earth and crawled inside, Tampa police said.

The bodies of Jason Ackerman and Sara Rydman, both 21, were found Saturday partially inside a deflated helium balloon at the entrance of a condominium complex near Tampa.

The 2.4-metre balloon was being used to advertise the complex.

"It was more a fun thing they thought they were doing," said Linda Rydman, mother of Sara Rydman, adding that the two were apparently breathing helium from the balloon to make their voices go higher.

But the U.S. Compressed Gas Association warned that inhaling helium is dangerous because it can quickly lead to brain damage and death from lack of oxygen.

The county medical examiner said Sunday the official cause of death will not be released for six weeks, until toxicology results come back.

To quote one of the forum regulars: "Nothing kills more people than a lack of oxygen to the brain."

Well personally Heluim is safe to inhale but like anything it is not recomended. What sucks about this is that they could have brought Heluim from a store and inhale in small doses and not drag a floating advert to get free Helium.

The funny part is that they probably fell asleep to death and must have been knee deep in Helium to get that way.

Again kids could buy Heluim in the stores

If helium is safe to inhale, then why do they not only warn of brain damage/death, but why are they doing a tox screen on the kids to see if that is indeed what killed them?

It's realtively* safe to take a quick breath of helium, as long as you return to breathing air right after. Immersing yourself in a completely oxygenless environment is not good. Which makes you wonder why people lock themselves in their garage with the car on to kill themselves. At least give your self the joy of talking like a chipmunk before you die.**

* As a former employee of a gas company, I cannot condone helium inhalation.

** As a Christian, I cannot condone suicide.

Isn't helium flammable? I'd rather blow shit up than inhale it.

Shocked

i can't even believe this was just said.
wow.

the hindenburg was a zeppelin owned by nazi germany during the 30s, which caught fire in mid flight and sank to the ground in a firey inferno, killing everyone on board.

you are thinking of Hydrogen, which was the gas used in the hindenburg, and all large scale zeppelins at that time.

I am a worthless piece of crap.

Actually, not everyone onboard the Hindenburg died.

Wikipedia wrote:
Most of the crew and passengers survived. Of 36 passengers and 61 crew, 13 passengers and 22 crew died. Also killed was one member of the ground crew, Navy Linesman Allen Hagaman. Most deaths did not arise from the fire but were suffered by those who leapt from the burning ship. (The lighter-than-air fire burned overhead.) Those passengers who rode the ship on its gentle descent to the ground escaped unharmed. What should also be noted is that almost double the number of casualties occurred when the helium filled USS Akron crashed.

So only about 36% of those onboard died. And while that's still tragic, the newsreel footage of the guy yelling "Oh, the humanity!" is still pretty hilarious. Besides, they were Nazis anyway and Sean Connery & Harrison Ford were unharmed in the debacle.

Balloons are slow and useless compared to jets? And I didn't realize anyone died on the Hindenberg. I thought everyone survived save for some injuries. Oh well, still not the trajedy the guy makes it out to be.

Wasn't used by all zeppelins. Germany had trouble getting their hands on other shit chems at the time. And other such contraptions did blow up IN THE SKY fucking killing everyone on board.

Well there has ben tons of plane crashes and Airships is much more safer then a Air Plane sine Only a airship can float in the air for long periods of time without every coming down. In fact only threw a Air ship you can everr have a real Air Fortress that just sits there on the brim of Space and Earth.

There is probaly a plane crashing right about now somewhere in the world.

Airships filled with HELIUM may be safer. And BTW, that Air Fortress thing is a completely retarded statement. Have you ever had a balloon for more than a couple of days? Eventually the helium molecules escape through the porous lining of the balloon and it begins to deflate and sink.

And I sincerely doubt that there is a plane crashing at this very moment. I think the stats show that more people die from shark bites or bee stings than plane deaths ever year.

Odds that you die as pedestrian on your way to buy carton of milk as a roadkill is much higer, than meeting your fate in a form of planecrash.

Flying is MUCH safer than driving.

Spanky, why are you debating the merits of a flying fortress? Besides, I don't see how an airshape is safe. I can't imagine the balloon could get hit by lightning and not pop the way airplanes can get hit by lightning and be fine.
