WWII Hero Donald Rudolph Sr. Dies At 85
Sat May 27, 1:15 AM ET

BOVEY, Minn. - Donald E. Rudolph Sr., who received a Medal of Honor for bravery for destroying two Japanese machine gun nests during World War II, has died. He was 85.

Rudolph died Thursday of complications from Alzheimer's disease, said Itasca County Veterans Services Officer Marvin Ott, who spoke with Rudolph's wife, Helen, on Friday. He had been ill for several years.

President Harry S. Truman presented Rudolph with the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, on Aug. 23, 1945.

On Feb. 5 of that year, the young Army sergeant crossed a battlefield on Luzon island in the northern Philippines alone — protecting himself with grenades — when the company that was supposed to be supporting his unit was pinned down. He destroyed two Japanese pillboxes before attacking and neutralizing six others. Then, when his unit came under fire from a tank, he climbed onto the tank and dropped a white phosphorus grenade through the turret, killing the crew.

According to the U.S. Army Center of Military History, "Rudolph cleared a path for an advance which culminated in one of the most decisive victories of the Philippine campaign."

Rudolph, who was struck by shrapnel, was promoted to second lieutenant.

As a recipient of the prestigious medal, Rudolph and his wife attended several presidential inaugurations, where Rudolph met Presidents Kennedy, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton and George W. Bush.

After retiring from the Army in 1963, he worked for the Veterans Administration as a veterans benefit counselor until retiring in 1976.

Rudolph is survived by his wife, a son and three grandchildren.

I love shit like that. That guy was a bad ass.

There was some book I read about Japanese-American soliders in WWII, this one guy got his arm blown off by an enemy grenade, trying to save his friend, so he just switched hands with his thompson and charged ahead, using the only arm he had left to kick ass.

How bad ass do you have to be to shrug off losing your arm and just shoot with the other one? That's awesome. Those guys are true Americans.

God damn. If I knew this guy, I would high five him every day in the hopes that his badassedness would rub off on me.

::Salute:: At ease, soldier.

I take it your a pacifist, so I can kind of, almost, barely understand the completely retarded mindset that all war is bad. That said, there was, indeed, a winning side in World War 2.

Put it to you this way, if the other side won, there'd be a good chance you'd be speaking German. National preservation (among countless other things) is a prize worth fighting for and winning.

So what if I use the word Jew. You have the words World War, Japanese, and Germany.

What I am sappose to say Israeli( how did I spell that ). I mean that is the overall word and there society is lead by Religion.

True Americans my but. America is a makemup word and will nefver be the same. All my life I had to deal with Whats your background, are you this and are you that and so did my sister and my mother and father.

No to hell with American pride this guy just wanted to help and not do his dutie and run away but really help like no diffrent today where everybody else. If you ever seen these ppeople right now in the Middle East alot of them are not built for war and they would have been artists, farmers, writers, and maybe even musican but now over like 10,000 people from the USA or united was killed just to help some rich Israeli or binnie hat guy kill of all the sand folks.

Thinking back on it that scene in Star Wars where Anikens Mother died and he Slaughtered all the Bandits is no diffrent then this world and USA bombing Muslim people and then the Churchies come along to bring the crap Religion to them So we can have anothjer set of self killing Darkskinned based people killing of each other and asking god for help.

Yes a tear rolls down my eye thinking about these times of war but the truth is they all could have been avoided.

There was this quote in a Magic novel I read, it went something like; "Mishra had always wanted attention, but Urza found it best to ignore him until he tired himself out". Heed the advice, ya all.

Ignoring the problem only makes things worse though. Maybe Mishra and Urza wouldn't have had The Brothers' War if Urza had tried to deal with him instead of ignoring him. I'm not saying that we should take course of action here, mind you, I'm just saying the source material may not be the best example.

You know, I didn't expect anyone to look into the context of my post. See, it's the internet. Ignore him, he'll get bored, and leave, or do something drastic, then we can ban him. If we knew the bloke in person, the problem would just manifest itself. But since we know him on this here internet, we can take liberties.

Agreed. But if Triskelions march upon SydLexia.com headquarters, I am going to be quite upset. And surprised.

Best Star Trek reference ever

Anyway, I think Regal is seriously challenging my tenets as an historian. His statements are so outrageous and historically inaccurate, that I can't even bother debating him. What's the point?

Well, only the planet was called Triskelion was the planet in that episode, I believe its inhabitants were called Thralls. And while Captain Kirk kicked all sorts of ass in that episode, I was actually making an M:TG reference, since Sock brought up Mishra and Uzra:

My apologies. I will try to make a good Star Trek:TOS reference in earnest in the future.

Yeah, I was wondering if you were still refering to that, but I don't know anything about Magic the Gathering, and I thought, "What are the chances that two fictional worlds used the same made up word?" Guess the chances were better than what I thought.

Oh wait, is it really a made up word? Bah, who cares.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triskelion

And to prove this hasn't gotten too far off-topic, it mentions the Third Reich heh.

While the image on the Magic card can't be the definition, Triskellion must be a word. Magic used, it, Star Trek used it, and it's the name of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters.

Upon use of a dictionary, however, I'm wrong.

Indeed, I ignored it because it's not a real dictionary, and I don't like taking links when I don't have to.

Well, if you followed the link, you would have seen that the word has a long history dating back hundreds of years.

And if you could spell, you'd see that it's in at least two online dictionaries:
